Jupiter-Venus Conjunction

I haven't seen this on the forums yet, so I thought I'd mention it. On 6/30, Jupiter and Venus will be very close to each other in the sky:

EDIT: Here's the pic, not sure why it didn't work earlier:xhEmxdF_aZzesN0p21vuhbwy1ClKPu3eWc0WmBsrUqU=w995-h796-no

Ya know, I always wondered why these sorts of events were really that important. I mean, it makes sense that early on in our history such events would be important, but nowadays I don't see the big deal beyond being something neat to look at.

Because they're neat to look at.

... and because they're neat to look at.

Plus the hobgoblins come out and dance in their light.

Well' date=' they couldn't possibly be neat to look at, amirite?[/quote']

Look at it through a telescope. Get your mind moving ! There's this small ball nearly the size of Earth and a far larger ball, yet they looks almost the same...

Conjunctions aren't just mentioned because of astrology, or even "because they're neat to look at." Having multiple bright objects in close proximity in the sky makes it much easier for the casual observer. Remember, some people can't even tell a planet from a star. And if you tell people that Jupiter is in constellation-X, for some that can be very hard to spot, even if they're using sky charts. But a conjunction? Just about anyone can find that.

That's sometimes possible with Venus. Jupiter, absolutely not. It's too faint.

My room's window is pointing west, and whenever it's a clear sky I just keep looking out my window till I see it. I can see it almost every clear day just before dusk.
