Asparagus Staging Oxidizer Issue

Recommended Posts

This game is truly addictive.

I was just playing with asparagus staging and ran into a problem with exhausting oxidizer before the staging completes. I was testing a very basic launcher with four asparagus stages and no other staging. The fuel transfers just fine from tank to tank. Also if I remove the ductwork all is well with a simultaneous burn of all engines. With the asparagus staging I get a flameout in the middle of the third stage. Cause given is lack of oxidizer. All remaining tanks have fuel. It looks like maybe the ductwork handles the fuel, but not oxidizer, transfers from stage to stage so the fuel/oxidizer ratio becomes unbalanced to the point of flameout. Could someone please try one of their asparagus rigged launch vehicles to confirm that all is well internally. If so, then I will need to drill deeper to figure this one out. Thanks.

Rob

Is one of your fuel tanks a liquid fuel only version? (These are used for the LN-V Nerv and the jet fuel engines). This could lead to not having the correct L-Ox ratio, and thus using your oxidizer while still having liquid fuel left. Alternately, you hay have inadvertently removed the oxidizer from a tank in the VAB (right click to set fuel levels)

Or, third option, disabled the oxidizer on any one of the tanks.

All tanks are the same oxidizer/fuel tanks and all are fully loaded with each component. All engines burn from launch through stage separation for stage 2. Flameout in stage 3 after partial stage 3 burn. Fuel indicators reflect fuel in tanks but flameout cause by no oxidizer.

Can you share a pic of the rocket in question so we can get an idea of what is happening? Ideally on the pad with the resource tab open.

I just did an asparagus rocket for a challenge on the forums, it worked as expected. The fuel lines should be transferring both fuel and oxidizer.

I've had bugs with fuel flow fairly regularly since 1.0.2, with one side of a 4-way symmetrical asparagus draining faster than the other three. Several times I was unable to fix it without rebuilding the stage. It seems to be some sort of symmetry issue.
