Time warp (in atmosphere) can make parts overheat and explode within seconds

Recommended Posts

see original issue here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/126758-Docking-Port-within-cargo-bay-suddenly-explodes-do-not-use-time-warp%21

My mk2 spaceplane has a docking port jr inside the cargo bay to attach stuff.

Despite closed bay the plane explodes on reentry immediately (after seconds) after employing physics time warp (shallow reentry, no temp gauges/warnings shown, bay closed of course).

Previous unsuccessful attempts to fix:

- delete physics.cfg and have KSP create a new one

Install quite extensively modded (but stock aero, no FAR!).

Particular plane does not use a lot of mods except MechJeb and KW rocketry, though.

If requested I can provide either craft file or save game file.

Edit:

workaround is NOT to use time warp, of course. Play the reentry slowly at 1x time and the plane descends without any heat problems.

I'm having the same issue. The Mk 2 probe core in my Nastybird exploded if I time warped anywhere past 1x in atmo. By "in atmo" I mean anywhere below 70KM altitude. And just the probe core explodes - I don't get any heat warnings on any of my other parts pre or post twain-in-two-ness. I haven't tried the physics.cfg workaround, nor have I tried simply re-launching the craft (it was launched and docked to a station in 1.02, so changes since then might be causing the issue).

The not time warping working around didn't work for me when I had this bug last week, the one that did is setting up the burn a minute before, switching to another ship in the tracking station, then going back to my ship and doing the burn. Quick save before and after each burn so if it happens again you can load and repeat the workaround. It worked for me multiple times on that ship, so hopefully that helps.

My workaround doesn't involve archaic things like "not time warping" or "disabling heat effects"

I've found that if you have a 0.625m part that is exploding due to overheating, use tweakscale to increase the scale to 0.750m and it won't overheat anymore.

I seem to have parts exploding from overheating whilst in orbit. I am talking instant explosion with no time for warning. Seems the cargo bays are screwed up in 1.0.4. with the new heating system.

UPDATE: Just thought of something. How many people are using Joint Reinforcement?

It affects physics loading. If got updated to switch the heat system on and off then warping might be safe again. just a thought.

UPDATE 2: Switch off max heat in the cheat menu has a good diagnostic function. For a fraction of a second when the bug happens you can see heat spread out from the affected part. Instead of exploding it just heats up the whole craft. Using this the exact part causing the problem can be identified. Sometimes it will cook off an adjacent part first. At least this way we can watch the heat movement. This is defiantly a bug in the heating system. The part is instantly heating up. It seems to occur when the craft changes it's thermal properties by time warping, ejecting fairings or using cargo bays. It is annoyingly inconsistent but defiantly present. Some potential stock candidates for closer inspection. Thermometer, Pres Mat Barometer and of course the Docking Port Jr. All of them are fine unless in a cargo bay.

Same problem here. For me the large SAS module is the first item to overheat and everything else heats up to max after that. (with debug - ignore max temp enabled). This has happened several times and when it happens it always follows a time warp. There was little to no heat on the engines before the time warp. I have yet to have a part blow up due to heat when this bug does not trigger.

Well, now that I said that, I loaded my Mun Science Lander that has been on the surface for quite some time with engines disabled, to do a quick experiment/transmit, and the large SAS exploded due to heat.
