Do the drills actually hold in place? Or are they functionally just legs whose drill bits have no collision mesh?

They definitely hold against slippage. Though I doubt they'd prevented a tumble if I came in with any considerable horizontal speed.

This has been done before, and it impresses me every time.

They don't hold vertically - you can launch upwards and pull them out of the ground with zero resistance. But my Minmus miner is a monster of 18 wheels, lots of everything in the largest sizes available, and when it sinks its two (only two...) drills into the ground, the 18 wheels and the poodle at the back won't move it from the spot.

I remember that there was someone who used separatrons as tiny landing legs on a tiny probe.

I did the same thing in a mono lander on Minmus, didn't work quite as well though the thing keeps swaying around and I am afraid that it is going to pop out and fall over.
