How do I grab a spacecraft in the VAB by a non-root part?

In a few YouTube videos and some streams I have seen people move an entire spacecraft by clicking on a part that isn't the root. E.g. Clicking on a booster and moving the whole rocket.

What key combination is used to do that?

I believe it can be triggered by a modifier key? I am not sure on that, though. It's only ever happened to me by glitches.

shift-leftclick does it on 1.0.4 for Windows.

Holding SHIFT while clicking will actually select the root part, regardless of which part you click. When not using gizmos, this means you can move around the whole ship.

the same works in linux as well. (though it has to be left shift because right shift is the mod key).
