How to make MK16 parashute open higher then 5000 meters

I'm trying to complete the "test mk16 parshute over Kerbin" mission. To do this I need to activated the parachute at 24000 - 33000 meters. But when I do this, nothing happens. The highest I can set the parashute to open is 5000 meters and even if I manually open it higher, the game says its not safe.

How to I get passed this?

I'm playing in career mode.

It shouldn't matter. From what I remember chute testing is no different than others - just stage it at the right time.

It sounds like you're not aware of the other speed requirement that always come with the atmosphere tests - did you check that?

Also, have the contract window open when doing part testing. You need all circles become green ticks when you stage. Sometimes the margin could be really narrow.

shouldn't matter if the parachute explodes - as long as you satisfy the requirements in terms of speed and altitude - and having the staging set correctly. As per post ^ - just have the contract window open and as soon as everything is ticked hit the spacebar.

I put the test parachute outside instead on in the the service bay and now it worked.

There are also, sometimes, an alternate way to test - unless the contract says 'must be tested as part of the staging sequence' you can test components by right clicking on them in flight and selecting 'test'.

Make one more check. I've reverted and retried some five times before I noticed what's wrong: I was testing M16 parachute, while I was supposed to test M16-XL.
