A way around that would be to use the Take Command mod. This allows you to treat command seats the same as capsules and assign Kerbals straight into the seat at launch. Would need a ruling from the OP whether he was happy with it though.

Take command wouldn't help because you still need two flags but yes you do need to count the decoupler and lander can in the ship mass IMO

Well, you could easily get around that by planting one (or more) just off the launchpad to be collected before liftoff.

Good point launch a chair with a kerbal in it. Plant a flag recover it then launch your actual craft. All you would have to do is add .2 for the chair from the first launch.

Hey RIC, what visual effects mods do you use?

I usually run EVE-WIP, Scatterer, Texture Replacer, RealPlume, Planetshine, Distant Object Enhancement, Engine Lighting and WindowShine (sounds like a lot when I list them out like that ). Those pics don't have Scatterer, I had temporarily uninstalled it while trying to figure out what caused a graphical glitch and forgot to put it back before doing that mission.

I've just finished taking a crack at this challenge, primarily in the "cheap" classification, but if we can submit to multiple, then I think I'd like to submit it to the "light" category as well (even if it's not really that light compared to the others).

It's cost was 16,081 and the mass at launch 54.7tons.

Thanks! It took a lot of tries to get the ascent to work, and I wasted a lot of tries reentering hoping I could lithobrake safely but it turned out bailing out was the only survivable option.
