[BUG] Improper Mass on MK. 1

Recommended Posts

All,

I was playing in KSP, as I often do, and noticed when I connected MK. 1 to the FL-T100 and then to the J-33 the center of mass is WAY wrong. At least based on the in game reported mass of .05. Could somebody check me and make sure I'm not going crazy? :confused: I hope it is the center of mass tool that is wrong and not the parts labeled mass.

Great game by the way!

You are not crazy, it is by design for the Jet Engine. The purpose was to move the CoM forward for planes. The CoM on most engines in real life is actually inside the fuselage oe compressor area. The KSP engines aren't quite like that in size, so the CoM is artificially moved to place the CoM inside the forward connecting part.

Unfortunately this has some detrimental side effects, especially for VTOL craft. And I have no idea if it'll change...

Also, welcome to the forums! :D

Cheers,

Thank you! Now that I know it is a "feature" and not necessarily a bug I wonder if i can make a change to some sort of config file that is used to determine CoM overrides like this? While this feature in some sense makes a "little" sense I don't play KSP for ultra realism. In any event this feature is playing havoc with my Kerbal's unnamed aerial vehicle program. :huh: Any ideas on a work around would be great! :)

You can change this line in GameData\Squad\Parts\Engine\jetEngineBasic\jetEngineBasic.cfg

CoMOffset = 0.0, 2.3, 0.0

Change the 2.3 value to whatever you like. You can do this directly in the .cfg file or preferably with a ModuleManager script...

There used to be an optional field in the cfg called "CoMOffset = X, Y, Z" - I presume the XYZ are the co-ordinates of the intended COM location relative to the original. Stock Rebalance Project used it to move the CoM of the old Mk3 parts, for example. I presume it's still valid and will still work, you'll need to fiddle with the numbers though (don't go crazy, +/-5 or so will be more than enough. Also, only change one number as you only want to change the CoM on one axis.

EDIT: I should type faster sometimes.
