Solar panel questions

I am using the basic panels.

They work for about half of my mission then stop working. even if they are directed towards the sun.

is this normal?

I have battery back ups to counter this.

When you right click the panel, what does it say for sun exposure and power generation?

Can you please include screenshot of your craft? Also check the sky, if there are any celestial bodies blocking the sun. You can find yourself in the eclipse without noticing it, but panels sure do care about eclipses...

I am not on my PC but I remember it showing that it has exposure and generating power but my electric charge remains unaffected. they just randomly stop working.

It's impossible to rule out "working as intended" without more details (like was there possibly anything at all drawing power to create a deficit even if they were operational), but needless to say they aren't intended to randomly cease operation entirely.

OX-STAT don't generate much power, it's very easy to overwhelm them, especially if they're only getting partial exposure.

are you outside the orbit of Duna, they will have almost no output then

Unless you have damaged them (something extremely difficult to do with the OX-STATs), the solar panels should still give output. Depending on angle to the sun and distance from it, that output may be reduced dramatically, so this may be the reason why they're not powering your craft, particularly if you have a power-hungry process running, like an ion engine or a refinery.
