Orbit Problems - 0.18.3 Demo

Recommended Posts

Hello, my fellow Kerbalians,

So, I'm trying to get to the Mun in the 0.18.3 demo. I build a rocket with a lander, SRBs, lots of fuel etc. but when I do my gravity turn my rocket spins out of control and either a) crashes or B) messes up the orbit. I have tried adding more ASAS modules throughout the rocket but they don't work. The Kerbal 5 works, but it doesn't have landing legs nor enough fuel to get to the Mun. Please help!

Getting into orbit is not easy - flying a proper gravity turn is a skill you have to learn like any other. Practice, be patient with yourself. You'll get it and, once you do, messing about in space is comparatively easy. Until you come to landing or docking ...

Hmm...a screenie of your rocket design would go a long way towards diagnosing issues. From the sound of it, though, your rocket might not be balanced symmetrically - if it's pulling to one side as you fly, that's likely the cause.

Here's a pic of mine from my 0.18 demo days. That's what folks around here call an "onion-staged" rocket; the boosters come off in layers. I used to fly that straight up to 10k, then pitch to 45 degrees on a easterly heading, and hold that until the Ap was at 100k; that's not the best way to fly that craft, even in the demo, but it worked for the early going.

These days (i.e. 1.0.x), that same flight profile would be suicidal, of course...

...from my 0.18 demo days...

Doh! I feel stupid now; just assumed this was about the current demo.

Now I have to install my oooold demo version again, as I haven't still got anything from that.

Spinning/flipping in the old atmosphere was pretty impossible though, so it's an odd one.

Similar, but simpler, than the more recent demo Mun-lander. Straight up to 10km, then 45-degrees works fine for this one in the older version:

Transfer and lander - no need for legs when you have stable tanks to land on ^^.

This exercise in history and lack of instruments doesn't half make you glad to get back to the full game and MJ :-)
