Wheels being trolls.

Recommended Posts

So, I'm placing wheels on this rover I have, but the wheels are being absolute ****** and don't place properly, if I place them with Radial symmetry then one wheel will be facing the right directon and the other will be facing the opposite, if I use Mirror symmetry both wheels will be on the same side, so it's impossible to make a rover, because placing the wheels one by one will take ages just to get the wheels aligned, so I can't make a rover.

I know this isn't because of any mods because it's to do with placng the actual part, and I don't have any mods that tinker with placing the part, this is really really annoying me and makes it impossible to make rovers, and it happens for no reason too, wheels will be placing normally and then suddenly this rubbish happens.

Can't say I've ever seen that, but then I don't recognise the part you are attaching them to... Does this happen with all parent parts, or only some (possibly mod) parts?

Also, I think if you start out with the mouse on the vessel in radial, then switch to mirror, it often goofs up.

But I think I know what your issue is and I think I've fixed this problem in my bug fixes. It has to do with the default symmetry that gets stamped on parts internally. There was another user who posted a similar problem with a complex shuttle setup. I believe in his case, the trigger was from starting the craft as the first thing, saving, then coming back later. The pure stock way to avoid this is to start a new craft and place any part. Switch symmetry mode to mirror, then start new or load your ship. In this particular case, the internals of your ship are already stamped incorrectly, but you can use the above steps to avoid problems with future vessels.

If you want to fix the vessel, make a copy of the original .craft, open it in notepad and search for all the symmetry methods and change "Radial" to "Mirror". That should fix your craft. Be careful if you Find/Replace all Radial with Mirror, because some of the parts have radial in their name.

If that doesn't fix it up, I'd be interested in seeing your .craft file to verify this. Or if that's not the issue, I might be able to add this case to my fixes.

Cheers,

-Claw

This looks like the wheels are in radial mode, it's R to switch between radial and mirror modes, with mirror mode being better suited for the SPH.

F toggles between absolute and local co-ordinates for rotation and offset.

Though once you place symmetrical parts in one mode (or one symmetry level) all child parts inherit that mode, unless you place a part singularly.

Ah, this bug... I've had the same issue on several builds I've done. It makes building the craft take longer. In my case, it was tied to the part I'm trying to attach too being rotated . for some reason the axis of symmetry is turned as well. The biggest culprit is if you rotate the base part, it rotates the symmetry of all part attached to it.

For example. I built a small rover for grinding science around ksc. I had the craft mostly built, but decided I needed to turn the cockpit(base part) 90 degrees so the hatch was on the side and accessible when I go eva. The cockpit I used was the mk1 capsule for cost reasons. After turning that part, I rotated the rest of the parts back to normal angle. When I tried attaching anything too the fuselage using mirror, it would mirror the parts to the top and bottom of the fuselage instead of the sides. This made it hard to get it mirrored correctly.

The fix I used, was to rotate the capsule and fuselage back to the way they were when I placed them. Then I could attach the other parts mirrored just fine. I then rotated the capsule and fuselage again to where I wanted them and everything was fine. Odd bug that never used to be a problem before. Not sure when this started happening though... Was sometime after 1.0
