User Interface

Recommended Posts

We can all agree that when F2 is used then all messages should be cleared from the screen.

This should be an option for the upcoming user interface.

Other messages that should be optional are the science data reports being removed and the warning pops that this is unrecoverable.

Once that messages is read there should be an option to hide future warnings.

Anybody have any other issues that the new U.I. might be able to address.

On this note it has always mildly bugged me that when I press Alt+F2 to pull up the debug log, since part of that combination is F2 it hides the UI so I have to hit F2 again to get it back. It only takes a few more characters in the "if" statement in the game code to check for and avoid that problem :\

Here is another issue with the U.I. from another thread

After hiding the U.I. using F2 the option dialog boxes from RMB clicking on parts can still be interacted with and can cause mayhem. Throttle decreased or engine shutdown are possible. Even if the scroll wheel is affected and cannot zoom if the cursor is hovering over an invisible option dialog box.

This feature might have usefulness but why not stick an option to enable/disable.

The scope of the U.I. extends to the vessel editor.

Why not have a lock part feature so that parts are firmly attached and cannot be mistaken and removed.

Have it as a gizmo or part option dialog.

This would save all kinds of Ctrl+Z reverts just because I took the wrong part.

Uh, F12 is the debug log, not F2 or alt F2. Might be different on other keyboards or OSes though.

The infamous click through bug.

Ahh yes I have encountered this pain in the ... bug. The worst is you have everything just right and go to save.

Oh wait I will first update the vessel name by clicking on the title in the top centre and also grab half the vessel.

Staging can be stuck be halfway in between other stages.

When trying to re order stages the mouse seems to double click the stage stack and leaves it half way and becomes obscured by the other stages icons.

Attempting to move this results in the half way stuck stage to move in whole increments always leaving it obscured.

This occurs rarely and can be fixed by using undo.

On the subject of group staging icons. Could the stack remain whole. That is not break into separate parts.

For example if I have a cluster of ten LV-T30 and want to re arrange the staging. It is sometimes faster just to work around that stack and not click and open it to drag it to another stage.

The staging should also collapse like directory trees. Sometimes I cannot see the exit button.

One item more and its for the vessel editor and sub assemblies. Maybe I have not figured it out yet but setting the part orientation seems difficult.

When I detach a part that is from a vessel that was made in the SPH and create a sub assembly the orientation is horizontal and when used in the VAB the orientation is now switched to vertical. This is true even for vessels.

This now means a series of rotations to attach the part.

P.S. Bold letters are for clarity. I am not shouting.

I would like the Function Keys re-mappable. F12 is the Steam Screenshot key and while I can re-map it in Steam, a lot of other games on Steam expect it to be F12 so they leave it open and then there is nowhere for me to put the Steam screenshot key for those games.

Long story short, F12 key needs to do nothing, or be the KSP screenshot key, or just let us change it.

Very much this. All the keys used by the game should be remappable, and should be remappable without backing out to the main menu.

While we are at it, make those things that require a mousewheel mappable to keys to better support laptop users.

The Alt+RMB should keep the view static to allow easier selection (and prevent unwanted dialog boxes) when opening the part option dialog boxes.

Part option dialog boxes should also have a method for removing. The handy [x] could close these unwanted dialog boxes instead of clearing all of them and starting over.

I also observed an error in the air speed value and units for the XM-G50 Radial Air intake. Air speed seems to be 10 times the horizontal speed value and the units are M/s (M= mega, m=metre).

I build using SRB's as structural components. These will never be staged as they are usually empty of propellant.

Could there be a toggle in the part option in the VAB/SPH to set these parts as "non staging items".

This would make the staging UI less cluttered.

The tier zero tracking centre is the only way to safely switch to other vessels.

After upgrading the tracking centre and within a vessels map view there is a handy pop up for targeting and switching vessels.

Could the "Switch To" vessel be available instead of having to return to the space centre and then going to the tracking centre.

I can repeatedly click another vessel and it sometimes switches to that other vessel with all kinds of Kraken events to follow.

@StormKat

That is a good idea but I am not sure how that fits into a user interface suggestion.

Ditto. I happen to like the default assignments (well I find them ..adequate..) on my current machine with my current software set...but there's nothing to say any of the above won't change in the future. Being able to remap those keys would be nice. Plus more flexibility in toggles (I'd like to be able to assign a key to toggle temperature and aero information sets for instance).

  • 1 month later...

After taking screen shots from within the VAB/SPH the idea to hide menus and everything else except the background and vessel struck me.

Hide the user interface inside the VAB/SPH with the F2.

Could this be easy to accomplish? This is not only useful for screen shot but also for vessel inspection. The less clutter the easier it is to examine the vessel. Unwanted user interface clicks while using the mouse to change view would not occur.
