SmartASS and fluttering planes -- how to cope?

Recommended Posts

In stock aero, I can handle my planes using SmartASS; usually by putting it into stock SAS mode. In my stockish install there is a mod that provides easy access to the SAS feedback mechanism via contect menu on any command module. I don't know which mod brough that feature, but it's priceless: using SmartASS to give the directions and the tweaked SAS to do it, I can control planes quite well.

Now I've gotten myself RSS+RO which also comes with FAR, but without said mod. I'm still struggling with keeping a plane in the air for more than a few minutes. The plane itself is rather kind, as long as I want to go straight it will fly well enough without any assistance. However, with WASD controls it's quite tedious and only a question of time until I mess up. Getting a flight stick is out of the question. Using SmartASS works in a fashion, but there's constant flutter that never quite settles down and sooner or later escalates without any apparent reason.

There are some FAR modules for mechjeb, but I don't notice any improvement -- if anything, it's become worse. Dear reader: if you can manage to fly in FAR without a stick, please let me know how you do it. If anyone knows which mod exposes the SAS internals and if it's compatible with RSS/RO, that might also help. (found it: Stock Plus)

Trim. Hold down Alt (on Win) or RShift (on Lin) and the WASDQE keys to dial it in, X resets.

FAR Wing Leveller. Comes with FAR.

Fine controls. Hit Caps Lock.

With those three you can fly OK with the keyboard.
