I've been lurking the forums, viewing some amazing creations, and getting great game advice for all 193 hours of my kerbin career. Tonight I became a member and am proud to share my greatest creation, the Duna 'VTOL' Lander! A stock craft (minus mechJEB). I am currently refueling the main landing craft on Minmus. The plan is to dock large heat screen in orbit around Minmus, then sling shot around kerbin and hit the Duna atmosphere hard scrubbing speed and landing safely. Any advice for landing a large VTOL on Duna would be appreciated.

For Duna landings, parachutes can slow you down, but using engines and parachutes is much safer. As this is a VTOL, it should be able to land on Duna quite easily.

Be warned that the atmo there is thick enough to burn you up while simultaneously thin enough to not slow you down very much above sea level. You'll need to slow down as fast as possible.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks guys.

I'm fully aware of the dangerous thin atmosphere. My first attempt at Duma was with a VTOL that had the vertical thrusters as jet engines. It flamed out and smashed into the planet. After several attempts I scraped that mission.

Should I be concerned with burning up on entry?
