Incompatible with this version of ksp error

Recommended Posts

Hi, I bought ksp on steam a week ago and I'm playing carreer mode.

Yesterday evening the power went out in our town while I was playing ksp.

It was anoying but I thought i will play further tomorrow. But today I can't play my saved carreer because of this message: Incompatible with this version of ksp

I'm running version v1.0.4.861 with no mods installed. So my question was if I can get an older save back or maybe I need to update or something.

Please help I don't want to start all over again :(.

Thanks for your time.

First, welcome to the forums !

Before doing anything, backup your save folder (that would be KSP_win > saves > [your save folder])

Then you can try to rename your "quicksave.sfs" file to "persistent.sfs". The quicksave might not be corrupted so this may work. Far from 100% sure though.

You can also try making a clean KSP install and copy your save folder there, but you have no mods, so I doubt that will be of any help.

Also, if you could upload your player.log and/or output_log.txt files, I guess that would help others finding a solution to your problem.

Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it! :)

I made my self a back up of the save folder but I couldn't find the quicksave.sfs, player.log and output_log.txt.

Should those files be in the save folder? because I think that if so, that's the reason it doesn't work :S. Or am I just in the wrong map?

Quicksave.sfs should be in the save folder, do you never F5 when playing KSP ? :o

Output_log.txt is in KSP_win > KSP_data.

And I think, player.log is for Mac only so don't bother with it; output_log.txt is enough

Thanks for the reply!

I've never known that I should press F5 :o but come on how should I know? :P

you can find the Output_log.txt here:

F5 quicksaves the game, if something bad happens to your ship (so quite often in KSP) you can press F9 to revert to the quicksave. I use it so much I couldn't imagine playing KSP without it. Anyway, if your game crashes or if the Kraken comes to see you, quicksave (quicksave.sfs file) is the best way to keep your old saves as it is not automatic, unlike persistant save (persistant.sfs file).

Also, I'm not going to be able to help you that much anymore from now: I can give general advice or solution, but I have no idea on how getting the cause of a crash from logs :P. So, best of luck with your issue !

Ok Thank you for your help and time! in the future I will use the F5 and F9 function.

Is there maybe someone else with a solution?

At this stage isn't yet clear what your persistent.sfs trouble is (the savegame, unfortunately the only file as no quicksave exists). Can see the output_log showing a stream of NRE (NullReferenceException), that is certainly a bad sign and points to some issue with parachutes, but would better check what the savegame has that would spring those NREs.

Also, about the original query about the incompatibility with the 1.0.4(861) build version of KSP. If (as I understand from the OP) that game was started with the same version, the incompatibility could easily mean KSP can't understand what is in that file (at least in part). If KSP happened to be saving to that file just when the power went off, that file could now hold all kind of garbage (sorry to say, but that's reality with computers). While hopefully examining that savegame could show some easy-to-fix mess, it may also be impossible to recover, or simply too cumbersome to rebuild.

S.A.V.E. should be stock. It automatically backs up your save games on a schedule. Jebretary is better for long-term storage of lots of backups, since it will take less disk space. Both can be used together, with SAVE making a backup every 30 minutes or such and Jebretary archiving it for long term storage. Edited by SAI Peregrinus
