Recently, I added a user to my contacts list, but didn't bother asking for them to add me as a friend.

Now, I don't see said contact list anywhere, and their posts don't show up on my profile page. What's the point of the contact list, then? If I want to follow a person's posts, do I need to pester them with a friendship request?
