Landing and suicide burns.

Recommended Posts

I am trying to land on the Mun efficiently, but every time I try I either miss the landing site(I have to land close to something), or crash in the Mun.

I use trajectories mod.

Any tips on how to do them?

Here's a quick and easy way to do a suicide burn that doesn't require any mods:

1. Do your retrograde burn from orbit the usual way, so that you're heading down towards the surface.

2. Place a maneuver node right exactly on the surface, where your trajectory intersects it.

3. Grab the retrograde handle for that node and pull. The arc will shrink towards the node. Just keep it pulled until the arc shrinks to zero and the maneuver node starts "flip-flopping".

4. Note the time-to-burn on the nav ball (i.e. how long it says you need to burn to execute the node).

5. Set your SAS to keep yourself oriented to surface retrograde.

6. Wait until the time-remaining-until-node is around 75% of the expected burn time, then throttle up.

7. This should give you enough safety margin that you slow down to a manageable speed when you're reasonably close to the surface. Throttle down (still keeping SAS set to "surface retrograde") and just eyeball it the rest of the way down.

The 75% is a ballpark figure, you may need to adjust it up or down a bit depending on your TWR, but I've found that that number tends to work pretty well-- big enough to give a safety margin, small enough that I don't waste too much fuel.
