Is there a way to reduce memory besides removing mods on Mac?

Recommended Posts

Here's a post I had a while back

"You are running out of memory available to KSP because the client is 32-bit, even if you still have unused memory. The best workaround is reducing your number of mods, particularly those which have many parts, models, and textures, or those with a few high-quality textures. Also, if you don't have Kerbokatz Utilities' "DisableTempGauges," http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/...ableTempGauges that tiny mod will address a memory leak associated with the temperature gauges (which memory leak nearly guarantees you run out of memory while flying any high part-count craft)." Is there a way to utilize my full memory?

If your requirement is to play KSP on a Macbook, as distinct from to play KSP under OSX, then you could install Linux which currently has a 64-bit version of KSP. But installing a whole operating system for one game is a lot of hassle. You're probably better off waiting for a month or two when KSP 1.1 is expected out, it should bring a 64-bit version to OSX.

If you were to install a Linux OS, you would presumably also have to install the Linux version of the Steam Client before you could download the Linux 64 bit version of KSP from Steam. I don't know that for sure, but I think it's likely.

64 bit in itself shouldn't noticeably affect how fast the game runs. All 64 bit does is allow the game to use more than 4 GB of RAM before crashing. If you have 4 GB or less of RAM, it won't make any difference. Although KSP version 1.1 will also be upgrading to Unity 5, which has a much more stable 64 bit version than Unity 4, which KSP currently uses. The instability of the 64 bit versions of Unity 4 is why there has never been a 64 bit version of KSP released for Mac, and is also why the Windows 64 bit version was discontinued. The Linux 64 bit version just happens to work because code is generally simpler on Linux, and so is less likely to bug out. But KSP version 1.1 should work with 64 bit for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Other features of Unity 5 will (hopefully) noticeably improve KSP's performance in 1.1 but 64 bit shouldn't noticeably affect performance by itself.
