(In case you never followed Gomez through his adventures...)

Fez is neither an FPS nor a simulator, but it is fantastic. Good-spirited, fun, intelligent. And it has an wonderful soundtrack.

One of the best, most coherent games I've ever played.

around 10$.

The soundtrack for Fez is amazing, and the concept is great, as is the actual game.

Not cheap at all, but Europa Universalis IV is great. I've clocked 450 hours on it, and I'm far from bored. If you want something cheaper, and don't mind lots of DLC (paradox pls stahp my wallet is dying) Europa Universalis III looks like (I haven't tried it but how different can it be? :P) mostly the same thing. The base game is £10, compared to the hefty £35 for EUIV. EUIV is on sale frequently however. It can drop to around £8, which will not hurt your bank account too much.

Try SpaceChem. It has a pretty steep learning curve, but is oh so satisfying when you work it out. I would advise you to refrain from looking at a walk-through, however tempting it may be, even when you are just trying to figure out how things work.

Although the child side of the forum would neglect my choices, I like War thunder for the planes, World of Warships for battleships, and World of Tanks for Tanks... just my opinion. The amount of hate between both games is annoying to look at because they both are very fun and nearly have the same gameplay but War Thunder is about realism (And yes I do play War thunder so don't accuse me of making up this information). Another cool game but technically isn't an FPS is polybridge :) Time consuming and fun. If you want another FTP on steam, dirty bomb is a very nice beta FPS out there. :) That's all I'm saying before I spark someone's biased hatred against my post... :) but its true

I recommend not just one FPS game, but a Trilogy; its free, but not available on Steam. It will run fine on the latest Windows or Mac or Linux machines and OSes. Its Bungie's classic Marathon series. You can get it (or any one of the Trilogy) here:

https://alephone.lhowon.org

The game appeals to those who like a good storyline ... or those who just like to shoot. The cutscenes were just artwork; not interactive.

Steam games I've enjoyed when not playing KSP:

The Long Dark ($19.99), winter survival in the Canadian wilderness

MirrorMoon EP (9.99), space-themed discovery and puzzles

FRACT OSC (14.99), discovery missions in a world of music (world is reminiscent of Tron)

Eidolon (15.00), survival and story-following in Pacific Northwest

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (19.99), First-person detective

Sunless Sea (18.99), 2D discovery in a world beneath the surface (think Jules Verne meets Lovecraft)

Or if you like Web-based games, I'd suggest looking at Fallen London. Same company that made Sunless Sea, this links into the same world, a virtual card game with good storylines. And free-to-play as well

"Volume" (by bithell) -- isometric stealth-em-up, very stylish and slick. Very smooth and slow difficulty progression over about 100 levels.

"Infinifactory" -- voxel based puzzle game, seriously addictive.

"Super Hot" -- I'm not sure if it's on Steam yet, but it's free I think and is a fascinating variant of the FPS.

The demo was fantastic, I can't wait to see the actual game.

Recommend "Invisible Inc.", which is an excellent twist on the turn-based genre.

Not on Steam but probably coming to, cheap, and currently sucking up all of my brain-power: "Factorio".

The problem is that it is so in depth you need a Fortress PhD :D
Nonsense. It only takes about 40 hours before you really "get it" enough to actually play. Then you start doing fun things like building drowning chambers for Elven caravans...

Ehh, too expensive, besides KSP can do that.

On a sale it's 5 bucks and it has awesome mods.

One other thing about FSX, I've put in over a thousand hours into it, probably the same amount I put into KSP, but I don't think KSP can do what FSX brings, airports, cities, multiplayer, missions, it's very fun, atleast for me.

If you do get it, check out http://www.fspassengers.com/

You can run your own "airline" and take passengers on trips, it's realistic, serve movies on big planes, make sure to fly steady, etc. I love that mod.

Also I'll put my vote in for world of warships, I know its not on steam but

It CAN do that, but can it do it as good? You can use a backhoe to dig a few post holes, but without an auger attachment it wouldn't do a very good job. FSX will most likely have a much better aerodynamics and physics model than even KSP with FAR. And even FS2004 has better graphics than KSP, FSX blows my mind and I don't even own it. And the mods I've seen for it are absolutely fabulous.

Noone has said Terraria. It's really fun and NOT a rip-off of Minecraft, as many may claim. However Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is very fun, but you need to play a lot of casual/arms race/demolition/deathmatch to play the fun part of the game. I've spent about as much time on it as I have with KSP, at least I estimate to have.

If you have any interest in old-school rougelike gaming (or D&D, or old RPG's), Tales of Maj'Eyal (<$10) is actually very fun, and very playable on older computers. Tons of classes, races, items, etc. It's the only "old-school" style game that I've put 150+ hours into :) I've got a few more suggestions along this genre if you're interested.

Also, it's probably been mentioned, but at the other end of the spectrum is Warframe (free). While you can pay money for their premium currency, you can still find and use (with the exception of time-sensitive exclusives) literally every weapon and suit in the game. It's one of my highest played (free) games, with something like 300+ hours on it. It's also one of the few that I actually spent a couple extra $ on for currency. Also in the FTP-FPS realm is PlanetSide 2 (free), though honestly I haven't played it recently, and it can get old quick. Still, the massive battlefields are cool.

Some other randoms that I've spent more than a few hours on: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare (currently $5 on steam), which is a first person slasher for either single-player or multiplayer. Attacking nd blocking requires good timing, so it's got some challenge and reward there. Newb servers are usually populated, but once past that level, there's a lot less (occupied) servers. Single player vs bots is still plenty fun.

If you like zombie games, Left 4 Dead 2 (currently $20, but I've snagged it on sale for about $2 - $3, bundled with the original). Pick up guns, shoot zombies, make it to the next safehouse. Teammates usually help.

That's all I can think of for the moment :)
