Ex Machina

I watched it this evening... It is one of those films that, for me at least, will churn in my thoughts for a day or two. I am actually surprised that there isn't already a thread on this forum about it. It would seem to be the type of movie that would appeal to at least some around here.

One of the reviews that I read described it as a modern variation on "Frankenstein", which I found interesting. And the film's story almost seemed to be a bit "self-aware" at times, with references to techniques for deception that were also being used by the film's script writer. It had flaws that my friends and I commented on during the movie, but overall it was enjoyable. It also touched on issues with AI that we've discussed over in the Science Labs sub-forum in a way that sent chills down my spine once or twice. That and we noticed a subtle nod to the film "Close Encounters" in a couple of spots. I thought it was better than Gravity and Interstellar...

For those who have seen it, what did you think?

To be honeat, it doesn't take much to get a better SF story than Gravity or Interstellar.

Yeah, that's my slightly facetious movie rating scale for use on this forum: I can say that I thought a film was better than those two movies without having to start a flame war because I never said how much better than those two movies I thought it was...

for such small production, is a very good movie.

Lately we have an invasion of AI movies, to name a few:

Transcendence, Automata, The machine (2013), Chappie, humans (series), etc

These last 3 years, the amount of AI plot related movies double.

It was alright, did anyone notice who was testing who in those chapter title cards?

I dont remember that scene, I saw it 3 months ago.

One of the thing I like it, is when he ask him, if a turing test would be valid here, knowing from start that she was an AI, but he dint know that the servant was an AI too.

It had been good to show this video in my Singularity topic, there are many people who commit the same mistake of ignore the consequences of technology due how last predictions failed.

My posture is: Ok.. it will happen, and maybe we can not do nothing to stop it, but lets not be so naive in our last steps as human beings.

Machines are getting smarter, so its a topic that will be more and more on peoples minds, that and automation:

That reminds me of a novel I've read quite a few years ago, which on several occasion I had trouble finding again.

It's about an embryo spaceship colonizing a distant planet and children being raised by robots. All the manual labor is done by the machines so people can do whatever they like to do. The society develops vastly different than what we have here on Earth.

Anyway, I've managed to find the title, so if anybody cares to read it, it's Voyage from Yesteryear by James P. Hogan. I know I'll be rereading it soon enough.
