Retrieving debris from below the surface of the Mun??

I have this contract to retrieve component NXZN-D from "the surface of the Mun". No problem, hop in a lander, launch it, land at the coordinates specified, only no component in sight... Did I read that wrong???

Target coordinates are 50*42'43"S by 41*28'22"W. My lander landed at 50*42'38"S by 41*28'54"W. Seems like I ought to be within 50m of the thing, right? Ok, if you do the math, that really is like within 25m... So maybe it's really small... let me just take Bill out for a stroll... I have him at 50*42'43"S by 41*28'22"W (target coordinates). That should mean the target is 0m from me... where is it?

There it is! 350m BELOW me. I can hear your skepticism already, so let me document this with pictures...

Here's map view showing Bill's position, the lander's position, and the target position:

Here's what I see at the target coordinates:

Honestly, I wasn't sure how I might pick this thing up to start with, but thought I should at least get there and check it out to see what I needed, right? But I still can't even tell that...

Now I did restart the game and when I went back to this position I actually saw the target much closer, but falling away, so this is a bug and I have to cancel this contract, right?

Your inputs appreciated!

Danny

ROFLMAO

SOunds like Bill has to get out the shovel to dig it out :D

Considering the absence of shovels and digging in Vanilla KSP however I also guess that it is a bug (I remember that the slight plasticity of the surface also caused some problems upon reloading landers in some early version of KSP [toppling landers upon reload]).

Perhaps has something to do with this ... or some kind of rounding error/decimal imprecision when it comes to the altitude of surface and the part that you´ve got to retrieve

Step 1) save when you are close to the object but not close enough for it ti start falling

Step 2) move into physics range and check if it fell into the body it should be resting on

Step 3) if yes, load and return to step 2

Step 4) recover as normal.

I had a rescue and recover mission but the first time i got close the pod fell on the kerbal.

I loaded a few times until I could get the pod not to kill the kerbal, and that time the pod actually stayed on the surface, letting me do a full recovery.

So apparently it is hit or miss as far as falling through the surface.

If possible, it may help to switch focus to the object in question as soon as it comes in physics range.

Thanks - tried it a few times but then was just easiest to cancel the contract and move on... ;)

You could have used the debug menu and manually "completed" the contract, since it was the game's fault that it got glitched.

You didn't need to lose reputation...
