constructables

Recommended Posts

I was thinking, it would be nice to be able to construct some things on site in the game. For example,

As part of the Apollo applications program it was proposed to convert one of the fuel tanks for habitation and lab space on a manned Venus flyby.

Or for example it would be nice to be able to build a moon base in situ. In theory you would have an engineer place a beacon that would mark out the base of the structure then you would bring building materials inside the marked boundaries. The engineer would then build the structure.

This would provide several interesting game play mechanics,

For example if one of the structures where an observatory that gave you science it would be a lot more interesting than collecting yet another soil sample.

In theory there would be a unique structure for each planet or moon that would do something different for you. These would be laid out via contracts in career mode.

Construction

Orbital construction and construction on other celestials [9] [10]

New parts** [11] [12] [13] [14]

I've read that thread many times.

In that context "Construction" refers to assembling rockets. That is why notes [11][12][13]&[14] are parts packs. Notes [9]&[10] are an off-Kerbin launch pad, and a sub-assembly manager, which is VAB/SPH specific.

Constructables is an EVA activity suggestion.

I partly agree with you. I think the thing you suggested is somehow similar to KIS and KAS. I would love both of those mods to be stock. And I don't see any reason against using tanks as living spaces once fuel is depleted.

But I'm against building modules/rockets on other bodies. They should be landed there and then, if needed, you could add smaller things/connect them together like in KIS/KAS.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and a camera/telescope part to observe other planets and stars for science would be awesome.

A module that can fab smaller parts from Ore mined on-site would be a good addition. Might be better to integrate that into KIS/KAS than into the stock game, though.

I think what the OP is thinking is a way to convert some parts, in particular empty fuel tanks, into something useful like living spaces etc.

I like that idea, for example an engineer could convert to a habitation module (and the model could be updated to have windows). An engineer and a scientist together could convert to a lab module etc.

In some ways this may be a handy stock solution to adding colonisation buildings.

Hmm... Maybe I would be OK with it if it was only the smallest parts you could craft, like the science instruments or the fuel pipes. Nothing bigger, though. Guess IRL 3D printing in space has to happen at some point anyway.
