Non - IVA radio altimeter

Recommended Posts

I was playing a probe only playthru, and as I went to land on the moon I realized, probes have no IVA, so I can't switch to IVA and see the radio altimeter. It made landing quite a challenge.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again, there really needs to be a RAD ALT display in camera mode.

It's been suggested many times before too, by many players including myself, and should be a thing IMO.

A crude, but effective, solution is to add a spotlight pointing down so it illuminated the ground as you get close. This works in broad daylight too by the way.

Once I suggested something about pods' level limiting both the iternal and external UI's instrumentation. (low pods have rusty clock-like indicators of the very basic instruments, and high-tech pods have plenty of accurate, digital instruments like radar alt. or heat level, DV, ect.) How would you like that?

I could definitely see that, the thing is this feature would take so little to implement, and it could be done in a way that didn't clutter the UI anymore than it is already. Just make the additional gauges swap with the VSI. Most of the time I don't have much use for that any way. Being able to scroll thru 3 or 4 other gauges at that location would be great.

I have once seen a mod, that allows you to get an IVA view if you have an unmanned spacecraft. This IVA is supposed to be the insides of mission control, the place from which your crat gets controlled. Maybe in that IVA, you will find an altimeter.

Here is a link to the thread: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/67450-WIP-IVA-PLUGIN-ProbeControlRoom-1-0-beta8a-IVA-All-the-things%21-new-3D-RPM-17?highlight=unmanned+IVA

What about being able to toggle the altimeter between surface and altitude kind of like how you can toggle the speedometer (for lack of a better word) between surface, orbit, and target modes?

I'd say to have something simple... The non-IVA altimeter backround turns "(pro/retro)grade green" If you're in-atmo, or on a sub-orbital trajectory. This way, you have another indicator of being orbital, aside from map view. You may also click the altimeter to change modes, this mode is saved per flight in the persistence file.

White backround on altimeter: In orbit (not necessarily a safe orbit, but an apoapsis above the atmosphere(if atmo body)/terrain average sea level(this is the value the current altimeter uses as zero).)

Green backround on altimeter: You're in an atmosphere, or you're gunna hit something in this SoI.

(I believe that white/green contrast should suffice for anyone color blind, but I might be mistaken.)
