[1.0.4] Take the VTOL pilot skill challenge and earn a badge!

Recommended Posts

Well, I've taken a shot at this certification, but I find it's pretty challenging even though I've got my share of VTOL-flight.

The thing for me is, I'm so hung up on setting a good time that I'm rushing things, throwing the craft around way more than I normally would.

I'll keep at it though!

It's ok, I don't mind if you take your time with things. Not many people have enough time for this kind of project, and even if they do a unique and well made craft can take several weeks worth of development.

Wow that is an amazing concept! It must take a lot of hard work to make a transforming VTOL. I look forward to seeing more of it :)

Yeah rush times we live in.... we all struggle to make time for our hobbies.

And this one takes a lot of time.

Thank you for understanding and praises.

Its is not much of hard work, but it is very time demanding. :)

Every bit of change needs testing and it is possible that part that you added at the beginning, made sure works properly and does not interfere with flight - essentially you build whole thing around it.

Might later prove too heavy or the cause of some other problem ....

But i love to build these things.

Will post more when i beat the course.

Cool! Yes, very time consuming.

Now look at what this challenge made me do...

It involved piloting from IVA. That introduced a whole new world of pain.

lol nice. Yeah doing it from IVA would be pretty impressive, I haven't tried that yet. I've been slowly working on a super-heavy lift modded VTOL that was originally supposed to have a winch on the bottom and be able to recover things, but the huge high bypass fans are really slow to respond and it's hard to get a stable enough hover to operate the winch precisely to pick up cargo using kerbal attachment system and the electromagnet.

Division 2 ... i believe.

So i tried it i am certain i can do better but this was just too good take of middle part to just throw away

I scratched the engines on both landings (but its is not even noticed in damage) They are really low .... will move em bit up if i dont forget.

Problem is that engine wash in forward flight blows right at the wing piece.... so it reports damage :-/

Acording to KSP time it is 9minutes almost perfectly :-)

If this take does not count ... its ok :)

i still had ton of fun :D

and that is what matters

That was fun to watch :), the commentary between Bill and Carna was funny. It looks like some kind of flying fantasy creature. The only violation of the rules is from exhaust damaging components, but I've decided to adjust my rules so that this will be allowed for basic certifications. So it counts :)

Thank you for your appreciation you are most kind.

It was supposed to look like a dragon.... but it ended up looking more like some baby dragon ... hence the name Drake :-)

i have added craft file link and some instructions in to a video description if anyone wants to try it.

Division 2 entry: F-21 Faust

Craft is stock + Mk2 Expansion parts, VOID was used for informational displays

8 minutes, 15 seconds

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Not the fastest time, but I'm sure someone more experienced at VTOL precision piloting could get a much better time with that craft - a lot of time was wasted lining up for the hanger runs and the admin center helipad at the end. Also, I have no idea why the F3 claims Jeb, Bill, and Val died. Twice.

Edit: re-reading the rules, I discovered that I forgot to take a screenshot taking off from the VAB helipad. Oops.

It's alright man. I've become much less strict for basic certification entrants than I was when I first set out. I can read between the screenshots a bit and rest assured it was a legit run :). Good job, nice craft.

Before the accident it was a FAR Kestrel/Harrier type thing that I was flying without reaction wheels or SAS. It has an approximation of a Pegasus engine with B9 compressed air RCS in place of the bleed-off for the "puffer" system. At the moment I can take off and sometimes land, I may be able to attempt basic certification with some more training :)

Gonna do a division 4 entry this weekend, possibly even division 3 if I have patience. Also I'm gonna do it IVA only and in KSP 64K (which will require designing a proper aircraft that has enough fuel to run the new distance between airfields).

Can we use Throttle Control Avionics and/or TAC fuel balancer for division 4 and 2?

Looks sharp Darren. Appears to be a valiant effort to capture the functional essence of the real life harrier.

Yes you may use those mods for those divisions; if they control throttle and fuel distribution I'd regard it as being sort of an autopilot feature in the context of the challenge. Good luck with your designs and the IVA operation.

  • 2 weeks later...
I made it around in FAR, in IVA only, in the Harrier, with a full combat load-out, without reaction wheels or SAS. I did use Atmospheric auto-pilot and Vertical Velocity Control, added two JSI/RPM camera's (one looks straight down at the center and one to see the engine position), added ASET throttle position, TWR and radar height readouts as they weren't easily visable and probably worst of all edited the KAX Jump-Jet engine to have the same throttle response time as the new stock Panther engine (0.5), it was 4 times slower and took over 12 seconds to gain 25% throttle. You might want to put it as Gate-Crasher, it seemed reasonable to have it perform as well as a stock one though.

It's actually a joy to fly now, especially hitting the air-brakes at 250m/s and falling straight into a stable hover.

Cool! All the autopilot and instrumentation stuff is just fine; regarding the "mod" of tweaking response time for the engines - I don't consider it overpowered in the context of your entry, you definitely displayed skill and good engineering. So it's a legit entry. Sorry about the delay, I've been playing Fallout 4 way too much.
