The Space Carrier Challenge!

Recommended Posts

The challenge is to build a Space Carrier!

NOTE: This challenge is a continuation of the Build a SPACE CARRIER challenge.

Rules:

Any mods are allowed.

The carrier must be in orbit of a planet.

Hyperedit and alt-f12 are allowed.

The carrier must have 2 docking ports minimum.

All docked craft must have 10 or more parts.

The carrier must be able to store 4K electric charge, docked craft must have 1K.

The carrier and docked craft must have 1 (nonstatic) solar panel.

A download for the craft must be provided.

The carrier and docked craft must have engines and fuel.

No editing part configs.

The carrier must have 2 Kerbals in it at minimum ALL THE TIME.

You must take screenshots at all important parts, (staging, maneuver nodes, etc, doesn't apply for videos).

Scoring:

+25 Points for every 1K delta-v on the carrier.* ** ***

+5 Points for every 1K delta-v on docked craft.* **

+15 Points for every docked craft the carrier can carry. *

+50 Points for the carrier looking good, (whether that bonus is added is up to me).

+75 Points if there is a lander with ISRU (or just ore tanks and the main ship has a ISRU thing).

Planet orbit multipliers****

Kerbin .25%

Mun and Minnmus .50%

Duna, Ike and Dres 1% (No muliplier).

Eve and Gilly 1.25%

Moho 1.50%

Jool and all of it's moons 1.75%

Eeloo 2%

Now for the stuff with the * things!

* Means doesn't apply if you used Hyperedit or alt-f12.

** Means delta-v at the location.

*** With all docking ports used.

**** In you used Hyperedit or alt-f12 the Kerbin multiplier is used no matter what planet you Hyperedited to.

I will add my entry later.

Leaderboard:

1 Alaiteir 79 points, first to complete the challenge

Also for people who have LEGITIMATELY (no Hyperedit/alt+F12) here is a image you can put in your signature!

So what... Something like this? In orbit around Jool? Flown there the old fashioned way after being assembled in kerbin orbit? No mods used other then Kerbal Engineer. Lifted off the planet in pieces using conventional rockets and flown too Jool on it's Nerv(nuke) rockets engines.

lampposthellojool1_zpsvm8m5sex.jpg

It has 18 Kerbins on board, is made up of the Lamp Post drive unit and 5 mission modules. Technically it has 10 seperate craft that can operate independantly in the Jool system.

1: The Lamp Post drive section

2: Passanger module housing 16 Kerbins

3: Reusable fuel tank with built in guidance systems(rcs propulsion)

4: Lathe plane mission module

5: Lathe plane 1

6: Lathe plane 2

7: Tylo lander module(containing the Tylo Lander)

8: mini tug1

9: mini tug2

10: minitug module(refueling tank with rcs, power, guidance system, and the 2 mini tugs)

It started with 6,700m/s of delta-V once assembled in kerbin orbit. But little more then 2,000m/s delta-V once in Jool orbit. somewhere between 3-7K delta-V on each lathe plane. 6300 delta-V total on the tylo lander. technically 9 seperate craft directly and indirectly attached to the Lamp Post, which acts as the carrier. unsure exactly how many craft it can pull, it all depends on how many parts your computer can handle before the frame rates make it unplayable... this setup came very close to that for me. also, unsure how much delta-V the mini tugs have due to the fact that they are purely RCS propelled.

Ok, this is something I launched recently for a video series I'm attempting to make, thought it sort of fitted here. It's entirely stock, no mods, cheats, add-ons, etc, used in anything from the design stage to getting it in to orbit. It wasn't designed for the challenge, although I think the carrier meets all of the base requirements (apologies for the SSTO's not having extendible solar arrays, but this carrier is designed to take all sorts so I could quickly design a new SSTO with them if you wanted).

(never posted an album before, hopefully this works)

Javascript is disabled. View full album

If I remember, it supposedly had ~7km/s delta-V, space for something like 32 kerbals in the crew quarters, plus a few more in the bridge. The SSTO's had enough fuel to get to orbit from the surface of Kerbin and then do some manoeuvres, but not a huge amount. The number of craft it can carry varies depending on what you want to put in there, it's got 6 docking ports in this test version (although while making changes to fix heat issues I'm also adding another 4 to the walls of the hanger bay) including the space for ore carrying landers on the rear. I'm not too bothered about scoring points though, I'm mainly interested in seeing what you guys think of the design in terms of appearance :)

I'm also working on a new (and better looking) version of the Astrid ( http://imgur.com/a/aGMDH#0 ), but I don't think that fits with the rules for this challenge

2 entries! :D

Alaiteir, that's a really good carrier, I calculated the points and the score is... 78.75! I will round that to 79.

(apologies for the SSTO's not having extendible solar arrays, but this carrier is designed to take all sorts so I could quickly design a new SSTO with them if you wanted).

As you are the first person to make a entry that is definitely legit I will overlook that.

Do you have a download link for that?

Also feel free to use the banner in your signature.

Jakalth, do you have anymore screenshots of that mission? Because if it's just 1 image of your craft orbiting Jool there is no way to prove that you didn't use Hyperedit.

Well, I am running a forum based LOG of the mission this craft is on, Here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/135614-Jakalth-finally-works-on-a-functional-Jool-mission

It has lots of pictures of the craft going through various parts of the mission, starting from assembly in Kerbin Orbit. Like Alaiteir, I hadn't originally designed the craft for this challenge so I had already started the mission before this challenge was available. I don't have any pictures of the many launch vehicles I used to get the parts up into orbit, mostly due to their being such low quality launch vehicles that I really need to redesign... Hopefully these pictures are enough, if not, then this is just an example and not a real contender. I'm not too worried. :)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Alaiteir: I really like that design! That's what a true carrier is like, carries the planes inside it's hanger.

How do I make a download link for it (not used to actually posting much in these forums, so a bit inexperienced)? And do you want that version or would you rather wait until I've finished (hopefully) fixing a few issues with heat etc? :)

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you both like it :D I'm hoping it'll be enough for my first attempt at getting to Jool with anything :)
