Explore the Mun - Specifics ?

Recommended Posts

Hello again,

I'm back to annoy you with another possibly silly question.

On the contract "Explore the Mun" one of the criteria is "Transmit or recover science data from around the Mun" where abouts is that exactly, is there a specific altitude ?

I did try gathering from really high up (1,000km, then lower altitudes, but it does not register on the contract sheet.

Does it only register once you have returned with said data, or similarly as soon as it's transmitted ?

Yes, it can be anywhere. The contracts that want specific locations (e.g. perform gravimetric scans, take temperature readings, etc.) say so specifically, and put icon markers on the map.

The "science data from X) contracts don't care about locations. There are two kind, " from the surface of" and "from space around". The former requires a landed ship, the latter can be anywhere that's not landed, be it high up in space or just centimeters above the ground.

Also note that it doesn't have to be NEW science-- you can re-do a science experiment that you've already done before. You'll get zero credit for it on science points, but it satisfies the contract.

So a handy thing to do is to make a tiny, cheap satellite with, say, a thermometer on it, and just park it in orbit around the Mun. That way, whenever you get a " Science data from space around the Mun " mission, all you need to do is to switch to the satellite, take a temperature reading, transmit it, and you're done. Zero cost and about thirty seconds of your time. :)
