a quest for organisation

hi everyone,

I'm sure I am not the only one that frequently has to go through some long list of poorly named vessels when I want to quickly build some rockets to achieve any task. only to end up re-building most of it in despite because none them fitted your needs.

in order to avoid such a fun-killing episode everytime I prepare a project, I decided to use a simple system (nothing new I guess). I now named every vessel by their objective/destination followed by specificity (lander, lifter, station module,...) which quite does the job, but has some downfalls.

I can't really use some cool names as I might forget therefore their original task, and even then I quickly have a long list of items to go through.

some might say that sub-assembly functions were made as a solution to this issue, and they are right. I am sure I could be a bit more precautious when I use it or keep optimising a serie of rocket.

and that led me wondering if there was a way to create files under wich I could place my vessels in the VAB/SPH? this could helps oragnizing saved vessels by project...or at least that could help me:rolleyes:

so any idea?

Not that I know of BUT.

For instance my stations which are standardized and take 9 launches all start with Station then there actual name function and launch order so they are all together.

Same thing Bases, Shuttles, Satellite launchers, Ore launchers,SUB (for parts that I move in the sub parts for later modification) and of course some just start with a name of FUN.

Then you can rename them once they are launched.

Now I did think about at one time moving some commonly used or rockets I really want to save into the STOCK folder but I haven't done that as I haven't enabled stock craft my career.

I tend to give my craft sequential numbers and then a description of their purpose. This is ususally just for the VAB saves though, once they're actually in space I'll rename them to something more creative.

How do you rename them? I did not know that was possible.

I usually build a lifter specific to whatever payload I'm launching, then save it for some reason, never to be used again unless that exact ship/payload is needed. In my most recent career I started building series for certain weight classes to LKO.

Javelin (I-V) - 1-12 tons to 100km

Lancer (I through IV) - 15-37 tons to 100km

Century (I through III) - 45-73 tons to 100km

Andromeda (Only built the I) - 87 tons to 100km

I do use a lot of mods, and I'm pretty sure my designs wouldn't be possible in stock. For example, the Andromeda starts using 5m diameter parts.

Right click on the controlling part (remote control unit, capsule or cockpit) and there is a "rename vessel" option.

That's the way I usually use, but you can also do it from the tracking station. With the vessel selected from the list, click on the information button "i", then click the orange bar with the name of the vessel in it. Useful for times when you only want to rename a vessel without actually having to wait for it to load.

Organisation, smorganisation.

That being said, I (unoriginally) like the Geek/Roman god thing. So my Duna manned vessal, is Mars Chariot, my manned Eve vessal the Venuvian.. My unmanned Eve atmospheric craft is Cupids Arrow... based on Venus being the god of love, Cupid being connected to Venus and known for firing projectiles...

Its a good system, guaranteed to completely slip my mind when I'm scrolling through the list trying to work out if the By Jove is the manned joolian mission, or Jupiters Bolt.
