Playing with RSS without RO?

Hey guys, hope I'm posting this in the right place,

I've just been revamping my KSP setup to finally upgrade to 1.0.4 and change up my mods. I'm pretty sure I'm ready for Real Solar System, since I've been dying to work with real world delta-Vs and planetary arrangement, but I'm not sure I'm ready to leap into Realism Overhaul yet. I've only just become familiar with all the stock parts, and I'd reather not have to learn the ins-and-outs of anoter dozen or more engines, etc. I can get used to things like procedural tanks and fairings, but I'd rather not add too many part mods.

So I guess I'm just looking for suggestions on how to construct a playable setup with RSS, but no RO. Are there, for instance, mods that could improve the thrust of stock engines? Or a mod that improves the mass ratios of stock parts?

I appreciate any advice

Try using Real Fuels with the Stock-alike Engine pack for it.

There's also RO Mini, which is a standalone ModuleManager config file that adjust masses and such.

SMRUFF rebalance mass ratios for engines and fuel tanks to more realistic levels. This will increase the efficiency of your rockets.

Real Fuels completely overhauls the fuels system. It gives you realistic masses and Isps but is a lot more complex than stock.

I also suggest installing at least one large parts mod, because you will realise that 3.75m parts show their limits very quickly for larger payloads (eg: KW Rocketry, SpaceY...)

Seconded, I've played with RSS without RO before, and launching anything larger than a 3-man pod starts straining the 3.75m parts quite a bit. I would recommend SpaceY for 5m parts, and even SpaceY Extended for 7.5m parts. These might seem overkill in stock, but it'll be a lot nicer in RSS than strapping loads of Kerbodyne stacks together. :P
