Add texture and/or shadows to water surface

Recommended Posts

When you get down close to the surface of the water, it's virtually impossible to tell (visually) how high above the surface you are. The water has no surface detail whatsoever, nor do ships cast shadows on it (though they do cast shadows on the ocean floor, which are visible if the water's not too deep).

This total inability to tell "am I 5 meters above the surface, or 500" is something I've always found off-putting; it breaks immersion for me. It has always been a fairly minor annoyance, though, because for practical purposes I can generally just rely on the altimeter, and when the only interesting thing you can do to the water is "drop straight down on a parachute and go plunk", the exact moment of contact isn't all that important (unless you have a ship that's falling just a wee bit too fast on chutes and needs a bit of engine thrust at the last minute to slow down).

However, now that they've made the ocean into an actually interesting place, it's much more of an issue. It would really help if I had some sort of visual indication that I'm getting close to the surface.

One thing that would help would be to add some sort of visual texture (ripples, whatever) to the surface of the water, so I can see how close I am and how fast I'm going. They wouldn't have to be realistically 3D modeled or anything, just a semi-transparent "water" equivalent of the "grass" texture you can see on land, for example.

Another option would be to cast a shadow on the surface of the water, at least while you're flying over it.

I don't know enough about the graphics internals of KSP to know how hard this would be to do, but it sure would be a welcome addition to the game.
