Top speed on water

Recommended Posts

With 1.05 and the water overhaul, I was wondering what the maximum speed on water is without bits of your craft exploding off. Asking for the elcano challenge because my old craft could just about do 95m/s on water. (Steering voids all warranties)

I think it depends on the part.

One of the first things I did when 1.0.5 arrived was to play around with a little micro-drone based on the new Juno jet engine. (I'm generally not an airplane guy, but that Juno is just adorable. Couldn't resist). It was small enough that I was using the little 25-fund Basic Fins as canards and vertical stabilizers (I was using the Advanced Canard as primary wings, this thing was the tiniest craft I've ever flown).

Anyway, I did several water landings, and invariably ripped off the Basic Fins while leaving everything else intact.

I also did some playing around with ditching an airplane (which wasn't designed as a seaplane) in the ocean and then taking off again. My design couldn't quite get out of the water, but it did get up around 100 m/s in the water without damaging itself.

So 95 m/s sounds doable, but could depend on your design. I expect it just needs some experimentation, just try it and see. :)

I'm sure someone will find a way to blow that speed out of the water.

Thanks, this was only the maximum speed of the craft with a standard jet, not speed record stuff. Sometimes turning was possible too! I was experimenting, because I think it's safer to go these speeds over the smooth water rather than the bumpt land.
