KSP 1.0.4 suddenly crashing all the time (on switching from map view)

I run KSP with KER, Mechjeb, Precisenode, EVE, and Near Future. It's been fine. Since this morning it has however been very crashy.

Only new thing I am doing is a a lot of very long ion engine burns. It seems to crash in the middle of the ion engine burn. Could there be something about very long accelerations?

Er, why is KSP installed on dropbox?

If there's any interrupt in fetching files it could explain why you're having issues, I suggest you copy KSP to a local folder and try again.

It is installed on dropbox so I can play it on more than machine. And the dropbox folder is on my hard drive. So AFAIK it is in a local folder.

KSP support originally said that there should not be any problem with doing that.

Through a process of elimination, including eliminating addons from the install, you may be able to track down the cause.

Yes indeed. I was hoping to avoid that. Will do a clean install and start from scratch.

Well, I've done a clean install & only put in fresh installs of my most reliable mods (KER, Mechjeb) - I am still getting crashes.

The only thing that's changed is that on Thursday, I installed and then ran KSP 1.0.5. Then reverted back to 1.0.4. Could this have created problems?

I suspect it is a memory problem, switching between map mode and vessel mode when near planets appears to force the game to reload some of the planet's textures, causing out of memory problems if you are running lots of mods. I was able to decrease the frequency of this by lowering texture detail to 1/8, anything not so severe results in crashes on about 60% of map mode switches at planets/moons other than Earth (using RSS mod.)

i have a sense that the saved application state has something to do with it. Deleting that and then running a clean install seemed to help
