The claw and 1.0.5

Recommended Posts

I am tempted to mess around with the Claw again, now that

all its ties to the all mighty Kraken supposedly has been cut. Yet

Bill and Bob, currently orbiting Kerbin in my space station and still traumatized

by the Claw-kraken-induced orbital gymnastics they were involved in last time I took

the Claw for a ride, scream out in terror have uttered some concerns about the idea.

Has anyone got any experience with the claw in 1.0.5?

What did I do this time?!

Ahem...

So no guarantees, but yes...two rather nasty bugs with the claw were found and squished. One was from clawing onto a craft when you are in command of the vessel that's getting grabbed (it would sometimes cause the planet to disappear). The second was induced in a very unusual way. Rather than bore you with details, I'll say that the second one is incredibly (incredibly) difficult to replicate. But when it happens, it's quite catastrophic.

So the cause of the second bug was found and fixed, but is particularly difficult to confirm if it's been fully eradicated (since it's so hard to replicate on-demand). Personally I'm fairly confident that it's fixed,

I accidentally sent up a Duna Rover that had solar panels...inside the fairing. Currently have another probe, with exposed panels, clawed to it to provide power. I've dubbed the thing Frankenstein. It's all going to Duna and if it works, I'll have a probe with a survey scanner in orbit and a rover on the surface.

So the Claw has been good to me so far this patch, but note I said 'if it works'...

Use claw's stock bug fixes. It makes the claw more safe.

FYI: The fixes that I created for the claw have since been fixed in KSP v1.0.5. So those bugs that I referred to a few posts up have been fixed in stock.

For anyone still using KSP v1.0.4, my fix pack is still available and does include fixes for the claw.

Cheers,

Did the second bug involve changing orbits without ever firing an engine?

The second bug involved ripping the ship apart, any other ships that were nearby, and any ships that you visited thereafter. Primarily triggered when you try to go to time warp. It did have situations where the parts would race off out of orbit.

The first caused the planet to disappear and the second one is described as "quite catastrophic?!?

Given the context I'm thinking it must be the kind of thing that would make black holes go "woah! , that's a bit extreme"!!
