Can someone help me understand what's exploding?

Recommended Posts

I think I mentioned elsewhere that my Munar Orbital Refinery has been severely impacted by some change that appears to have come in with 1.0.5.  Whenever an engine (in this case, a LV-909 Terrier) is pointed in the station's direction (in order to slow the ship in the last stage of rendezvous, for instance), some part of the station explodes, which then causes other parts to explode, etc., in a miniature Kessler syndrome that leaves the entire station as an expanding cloud of debris.  I haven't thoroughly tested, but it's happened at about 150 and also at 200 meters' distance.

I can't quite figure out what's exploding, and how to prevent it (if possible).  I hypothesize that it's one or more of the fuel tanks or the ore tank-- a safe guess, as most of the station's mass is fuel and ore and their tanks.  Has anyone else had this happen and/or looked into it?  Is there some sort of shielding that could be added that might be effective?  When I get some more time to fiddle, I'll do some testing and trying, but I'm curious to know others' experiences of this...

(put in Modded because my game is modded, but I think it's the core game changes that are affecting me.)

Engine exhausts can overheat distant parts quite quickly. To see this is the case next time before your braking burn toggle the temperature overlay with [F12]. If any parts turn yellow they are getting hot.
To avoid 'roasting' your station try to avoid flying directly towards it. Instead come in at an angle.

It can also be a clipping issue but those usually manifest themselves the moment the ship gets loaded. (at 2.3km)

Actually, last night I discovered that it may have been something entirely different at work.  When I attempted merely to drift close to the station, it still exploded.  Deciding that I was simply going to junk the station altogether, I attempted to select it to get the crew off it, I found that I couldn't, either in Map View or in the Tracking Station.  Now I think I may have done something irreversible to it when I upgraded to 1.0.5 and loaded mostly but not precisely the same mods.  I'm guessing there was something in there that was in a mod I didn't reload on the upgrade that caused the issue.

(I saved, took a deep breath, and terminated it in Tracking Station... and the Kerbal crew magically appeared in the Astronaut building, none the worse for wear...  I was hoping that would happen-- something similar once happened to me when one of my vessels disappeared for no apparent reason.)

So, I think what was actually happening was that it was exploding whenever I got into physics range, probably because of some part that was missing or got bugged because of the mod shuffle.
