Tylo Delta V

Recommended Posts

dV required depends strongly on your piloting skills and your initial orbit. You need a lot less dV to land from a circular 10x10 km orbit above the surface than from an elliptical 20 x 800 km one.

Most dV maps give minimum numbers. In other words, when a map says 4540 m/s, it assumes the lowest possible circular orbit that will not plaster you against a mountaintop, as well as a perfectly flown reverse gravity turn landing onto an unobstructed landing site, followed by a launch straight back into that lowest possible of all orbits.

Therefore you should always have some extra fuel margin to compensate for less than perfect piloting, adverse landing site conditions, and higher starting orbits.

From a 30km x 30km orbit my first successful landing (at 4km altitude) took 3150m/s and ascent cost 2700m/s.

My follow-up attempt required a bit less to land (I don't seem to have recorded the figures) as I had a better idea of what I was doing. Even so, I took a multi-stage lander with 7km/s of delta-v just in case. Tylo is a harsh mistress.
