Thinning out the asteroids...

Recommended Posts

So, I recently started checking to see why I was getting so much lag in the map scene... turns out that I have 425 asteroids lurking in the shadows... I've never SEEN so many Near Kerbin Objects on the scope before. Any way to prune that back to, say, 40 or so? Or to figure out WHY I have so many popping up? My previous limits were no more than 20, so this is a little odd.

EDIT: Just checked into the Tracking station again... Now up to 488. All in 33 Kerbal days.

The thing you need to do is NOT track every asteroid.  Only track the ones that you truly are interested in and intend to visit in the near future.  So to cull the herd you have, go to the tracking station, select an asteroid, and hit the Stop Tracking button.  You'll have to do this hundreds of times it sounds like.

See, asteroids that are NOT tracked have a short lifespan.  They are randomly conjured out of nothing, exist for a week or so, and then vanish back into the void from which they sprung like they never existed.  The only way to make them hang around in your game is to track them.  This converts the asteroids into "ships" in game terms, so they become permanent additions to your game the same as the ships you build.  But if you ever stop tracking them, they go back to being ephemeral and quickly cease to exist.

That's the thing... I have tracked ZERO rocks. Every popup rock has remained on the scope LONG after it should have disappeared. That's what's so confusing and why I'm turning to the forums for help. Unless I want to actually capture a rock, I never track them. They tend to clutter up the "in-flight" bar.

Almost certainly this is being caused by some mod (perhaps something newly installed, perhaps something that 1.0.5 somehow broke and is now running amok).  All I can say is, go through your mods list, and see whether you're running anything that's likely to have some effect on asteroids.

Hmm... There's only three that I can think of having ANY impact at all:

-DMagic Orbital Science: Adds a new, asteroid-specific experiment. Probably not the cause, as I've had it installed before without this bug

-Community Resource Pack: Adds new resources to the asteroids. Again, had it before, didn't have the swarms. That leaves...

-Kopernicus/Outer Planets Mod: Recent and first time addition, and the problem cropped up after installing it. But, it's so cool to have that I'm hesitant to give it up.

So, that begs the question: how do I get rid of the untracked asteroids if I want to keep Kopernicus and OPM?

This is a known effect of installing the official Asteroid Day mod. Normally you're only supposed to spot masses of asteroids when you have a telescope in place, but somehow the 1.0.5 mod update induces that effect at all times.

I have the updated 1.0.5-friendly version of Asteroid Day and am not having this problem.  Asteroids appear and disappear quickly as they're supposed to.

I have all those mods myself (and Asteroid Day) and am not having your problem.  If you haven't tracked any, then I have no idea why your asteroids aren't dying out.  Sorry.
