I want to see some tries from the runway. What do you think about a separate leaderboard for the runway?

In case you haven\'t googled it yet, lithobraking means using a structure to slow down your speed for a safe landing by being crushed beneath your craft. In my case, the structure was engines, tricoupler and tank.

I had basically the same idea you did. They died landing, but hit 339.8 m/s on the way up.

115 engines on nacelles, 13 fuel tanks.

There\'s a smidgen of fuel left, I might be able to swap one large tank for one small tank.

Here\'s what it looks like swapping a large tank for a small tank. 344.7 m/s but craft falls apart at 10 seconds just as the fuel runs out.

Sorry for the double post, but I modified my ship design because I realized wobbliness was likely losing me some efficiency. I also made a variant where my crew survives both on the way up and on the way down, so first, allowing the crew to die on landing I reached 347.6 m/s

Allowing the crew to survive the landing, I reached 346.5 m/s. This is the same design but with a decoupler and parachute.

It might be possible to swap things around a bit and squeeze maybe another 1m/s out of things but I\'m pretty close to the limit of this design, I think.

I was thinking. In those 10 seconds of straight up travel, you lose 100 m/s due to gravity losses (or what is the gravity on Kerbin?). So a angled or horizontal ascent should be faster...

I did try launching horizontally from the Rocket VAB, it was some form of big fuselage hook with a horizontal rocket hanging from it. It was not pretty, and it didn\'t work. :3

EDIT: HVAB launches are more difficult. Your rocket has to leave the ground before the mission timer starts, making it possible to cheat by getting up speed on the runway before liftoff.

I\'m running into the above problem. I\'m using the runway, and therefore the timer doesn\'t start, because it gets no height.

Hmm. I can get faster than 400m/s in under ten seconds, using plain ol\' SRBs. Now, I\'ve just gotta make sure they don\'t overheat and explode on me XD.

Is orbital speed ok or does it have to be surface?

Surface otherwise you could easily get a piggyback a few hundred m/s by launching in the right direction.

290.8m/s. I suppose I\'m technically not all stock, using the fpspod mod, but all that does is tell me altitude and fps.

Technically, you shouldn\'t even be able to see that pod...it\'s travelling over 20 times faster than the speed of light.

I was able to increase my maximum speed by removing the decoupler and thus reducing wheight while still being able to make a 'safe' landing.
