Oh, PartTools

I will confess this right off the bat: I use Unity 5.  Please don't get mad.  It works fine.

So, when I go to add certain IVA props, Unity crashed.  This has happened for sure with the following:

  • Seat_(Anything)
  • All cargo bags
  • Hatch_(Anything)
  • Probably more

Is this just because of me using Unity 5, or is it an issue with using Part Tools .23 with 1.0.5 stuff?  I know spawning the new Mk1 IVAs causes this, too.

It's because of the Part Tools version. They haven't released the new one yet, which we need for those props.

OK, that's what I thought.  Another reason I can't wait for 1.1.

There's nothing wrong with using Unity 5 unless you're trying to animate parts. Even then you can get around the issue by editing certain files in notepad.

It's just an overly complicated and unnecessary step in comparison to using an older version of Unity so there's no reason to recommend it to folks just getting started.

I actually animate parts just fine with it...  I import it from Blender, though.

It's not the activity of animating the part that doesn't (or didn't) work, it's that newer versions of Unity do (or did) not have the legacy animator, and KSP required it to play animations correctly.

If it works now, something has changed, be it Unity 5 or KSP itself.

Unless the legacy animator is now available in Unity 5 or something changed in KSP itself, they will be broken.

The legacy animator is available.

I ninja edited but the gist is the same.

I have to try this, I've been stuck in 4.2.2 for forever

I personally need to have Unity 5, because I'm developing a game, so I've compromised with KSP modding.

Another reason for MUST-HAVING a newer version of part tools is that old one just can't see DDS textures for stock props.

And I just started to understand how to make a proper IVA... Such a waste...

At this point I'm waiting on the new part tools and Unity 5 before doing any more IVA work.

Same here....can't go any further on the delta glider landing gear and other stuff

  • 3 weeks later...

I too await for an updated version of KSP PartTools with bated breath, especially updated documentation on how to animate emissives under the new system.

I believe I was the source of the information regarding changes to how animations worked in Unity 4.3+ / newer versions of KSP. To clarify:

 - You can definitely do most (moving/rotating/scaling) animations for KSP in Unity 4.3+, using the Animation or the (newer) Animator component

 - However, Unity 4.3+ changed the way animated textures (such as emissives) were handled, and AFAIK the new Animator component does not support animated emissives. The file-hacking workaround mentioned is to force Unity 4.3+ to use the legacy animation system for animated emissives, but that technique became increasingly reliable as of 4.6+

 - As such, if you're working with animated emissives (such as engine bells, lighted windows or glowing lamps), it is easier to just use Unity 4.2.2, back when the legacy animation system was still "mainstream".
