reentry from 70k with MK1 pod and parachute

Recommended Posts

I bought a new laptop, after one month I installed KSP, recovered my save game from my old laptop and copied my mods.

But now when I reenter the atmosphere my pod does not go below 249 m/s before hitting the ground or water.

I found one other post with similar problems. Someone helps him by making this video:  https://youtu.be/W8bmsVSsAkY

But mine pod does not decreases speed like this guy?

Can someone help me?

Edit 2015-12-30 8:15 CET:

No orbit, just sub-orbit tourist run ;)

I tried it again with a long ballistic path. http://prntscr.com/9k64u5

Heat shield did his job, which was nice http://prntscr.com/9k652x

But the reentry speed was still too fast:

At 5000 meters: http://prntscr.com/9k65dw

At 300 meters: http://prntscr.com/9k65lc

Any ideas what could be wrong?

Could I have made an error by copying the game data/Squad folder from the old game? Does that have any effect?

Edit 2015-12-30 09:11 CET:

I noticed that i can return one MK1 pod back without heat shield from an up and down trip to 70k - 100k. Space tourism is open for business ;)

None of the ablator is used, how is that possible if you went from orbit? It usually burns up like 10-20 from 70km orbit

What was your periapsis when entered? It should be around 10-20km to give the pod proper time to slow down.

I assume he wasn't in orbit. On a straight up and down flight you don't get fast enough to burn any of the ablator and your pod won't have time to slow down enough to deploy the parachute. Sub orbital flights need to be flown as long ballistic paths now to allow the ships time to decelerate.

ETA- you will just survive a straight up and down if you don't have a heatshield. The shield is just dead weight in that situation and it only serves to increase the terminal velocity of the ship.

Yes, if the old machine was running a different version of KSP then this would have created a mixed-up combination of the two versions of the game.  I would recommend a clean install of KSP and then don't copy the Squad folder when you copy your mods in.
