Question about Ion engines

Hello everyone,

 

How can I get Ion engines. I could not find them in research and development place. Should I install them as mod ?

Ion engines are stock, as I recon the parts sit somewhere on the very end of the tech-tree.

If you are playing career, you will need to upgrade your R&D facility before you can research it. It is in the 2nd column from the left (almost the very end of the tech tree), and the 4th row (from the bottom)

 

Note that they are very low thrust, and Xenon gas is a very expensive fuel. They are good for lots of very small maneuvers, but if you want to go to the mun with them (or another planet), you will need to break up your burn (perapsis kicking) and spend a very long time thrusting.

There's no need, it is included in stock:

1) In sandbox mode simply go to the "engines" tab in the VAB or SPH to find it

2) In career mode progress until you unlock "Ion Propulsion" in the technology tree.  It's one of the last things that you are able to unlock in the tech tree.

Here's a picture of where you can find it in the tech tree.  You are looking for the IX-6315 "Dawn" Electric Propulsion System:
