MMOs

I sometimes dive into a new MMO for a few hours, only to once again realize that I prefer playing alone :D

My favorite is probably Spiral Knights. It's mostly 4 player instances (so not really a mmo), but it's fast, fun, cute and enjoyable with a gamepad :)

What do you look for when finding a game

Something "new" or at least "different". Grind-fests are old and boring.

what makes you stay at it?

The community and friends are ultimately what makes or breaks longevity of an MMO for me.

Quality of players.

I mean, let's face it, the reason you play an MMO instead of a solo RPG is because MMO's have other people in them. If you're in an MMO the social aspect is part of it. So I always looked for MMO's where the other players weren't being total <insert perjorative here>.

In that regard, my favorite MMO was EverQuest. That is, early-days EverQuest (before and including the Planes of Power expansion). The extreme difficulty of vanilla EverQuest compared to other MMO's of the time (it was very difficult to level up without a group) meant almost everybody in that game had at least reasonably decent behavior--you had to work with groups to survive, and so you had to get along with others. This aspect did a great job of eliminating the jerks from the game.

Well one of the first things I look at is character development.  I prefer MMO's with a lot of options to truly make your character unique.  If I'm not having fun leveling and assigning points, then I'm probably not playing for very long.

Next up is usually combat system.  I've been moving away from WoW-style (stand here, press these buttons) and more towards action-RPG style (timing of sword swings, better character control, etc.), of which there are not many.

Personally, quality of other players is usually not too big of a factor.  If the world is very very low population, that's a bad sign.  Otherwise, it doesn't make too big a difference for me.
