Review Science Data box need a close button

Recommended Posts

My multi biome multi celestial body ship has over 150 different science experiments in its lab now. Its a real pain to have to carefully "store" each one again as the only way to close the box. It should be easy to give it an 'X' close button. I have to go through this huge stock every time I go fishing for something that can fit to process into data to refill the lab's research pool.

I say carefully as the 'store' vs 'dump' buttons shift depending on whether you could process the data or not. The process button makes things shift.

Really though the review data box needs a close now button.

It really does--in fact that entire interface needs an overhaul. I usually only have up to about 30 experiments on one craft but even that becomes a huge pain.

It would also be nice if the interface allowed selecting specific experiments to transfer to an EVA kerbalnaut rather than an all-or nothing approach. Being able to transfer experiments from part to part within a ship would be a good idea as well; it's not like researchers on the ISS have to put on their spacesuits and pop outside to move data around.

Would be also good to be able to access only the experiments in a particular "container." But if you're reviewing the science from some crewed pods, you could "see" all the experiments on the craft, and the part containg the data would be identified somehow, like highlighting it.

…and kerbals need the ability to take and put individual experiments, rather than everything at once…really, @AbacusWizard is right - the entire science data management system needs a good hard look-at in 1.2.

TBH they could pick a page of the Science archives page ( on the R&D building ) and list a sorted ( or sortable ) list of what you have stored in a part where clicking in one item would lead you to the science report in question individualy. The current system ... well, reeks of placeholder :/

Amen to this suggestion.  That UI is just excruciating.

My two cents:

  • There needs to be a "close" button, as the OP suggests.  The ESC key should be tied to it.
  • Rework the UI so that the same buttons are always in the same positions.  They shouldn't jump around based on the length of the text, or the presence/absence of a research button, or whatever.
  • Sort the list so that it's most recent first.
  • Change the semantics so that it's not a set of things that you "check off" as you go through them.  Instead, it's simply a browsable list.  Stick a scroll bar on it (vertical at right, or horizontal on the bottom, I don't care) with a draggable thumb to browse forward and back through what's stored.  Put one-click "last result" and "next result" buttons at each end of the scrollbar.
  • Have hotkeys for "forward" and "back".  For example, override [ and ] so they serve this function (instead of switching ships) if the science UI is up.

The result of doing that:

  • The thing you're most interested in (new science) is always at the top, always immediately focused when you bring up the UI.
  • If you want to rapidly browse one-by-one, put the mouse over the "next" button and just click-click click.  Or, even better, just hit ] ] ] ].
  • If you want to rapidly jump around in the list, grab the scrollbar thumb and drag it.

Aaah, the number of times I've trashed perfectly good Science because I intended to “close” that dialog...

Urg, that reminds me of one time when I was viewing all my science records from a trip to, I don't know, Duna or something, and clicked the "keep" button over and over and over again to close the window... and only noticed when the ship's antennas all started opening that I had been clicking the blue button instead of the green button.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

lol... well, at least that's better than hitting Alt-F4 when I meant to hit Alt-F5.  :)

(...well, actually, depending on circumstances it may be worse.  Well, anyhow, it ain't good.)

For Science Management I use the Ship Manifest mod which does the move science around very well.

It doesn't interact with the UI for the keep/process/transmit/delete data. Which needs that close button and yes to stablizing the button positions.
