Does is true that Mission Controllers during STS-107 mission knew that shuttle not survive reentry and not tell crew about it?

One can only wonder how a documentary How the Columbia Crew Could Have Been Saved, based on the documentary “Gravity,” would look like when broadcasted by the Discovery Channel. Given the seriousness of the subject I'd suggest a very restrained production... perhaps done by Michael Bay?

I don't want this discussion to turn into a sick, horrible, morbid, cold-hearted joke. So I'll leave that and be more serious about this catastrophe from now on. You can do anything to this post, moderators. Delete it if you can, because I feel horrible about it.

Actually in that case there was literally nothing that could be done about it. There was no way to know if the lightning strike set off the parachutes except to try and deploy them. Even if they could have found out if the pyros had been fired, there was no backup. They simply would have been left with the choice to die of lack of oxygen in space or by being crushed when they hit the water. I'm not sure what you would investigate.

You could still fire the LES motors, you know...

If the strike set off the parachutes, nothing would help. You can't crawl out of the capsule and suddenly replace the chute, like in KSP. Did you mean something else?
