Does is true that Mission Controllers during STS-107 mission knew that shuttle not survive reentry and not tell crew about it?

If the strike set off the parachutes, nothing would help. You can't crawl out of the capsule and suddenly replace the chute, like in KSP. Did you mean something else?

They knew something was up, but they didn't know for sure if it was fatal. They didn't tell them since it would've been a distraction from the mission. If it wasn't fatal it would have been an unnecessary distraction.

The commander, at least, was informed of the debris strike and the analysis.
