Steam transfer question

Recommended Posts

I would like to participate in the 1.1 pre-release builds, BUT I have a few concerns. I have not transferred my copy of KSP from the store to Steam for of a number of reasons, primarily because, if I remember correctly, once I do, I would lose the ability to download from the KSP store. Is this still true?

So long as I can still download from the KSP store, I have no problem transferring to Steam. But, if Steam becomes my only source to get the game then, no, absolutely not. As far as making a separate purchase, yes, I would consider that. But, $40 is probably more than I can part with just to take part in experimental builds, again.

As far as I know, the ability to transfer a KSP store copy to Steam was a temporary option which is long since expired. I'd be happy to be proven wrong however.

Ok, thanks, I thought I had read that somewhere. So that pretty much settles that, if that indeed is the case.

Update : I still have the option to transfer to Steam in my KSP store account, but it does appear that all transfers are final, I would lose my ability to download from the KSP store. Am somewhat disappointed and frustrated, but oh well. Life goes on.

The question of transferring a KSP store account to Steam is thoroughly covered in the FAQ:

I bought the game on the KSP Store, but I want it on Steam. Will you give me a Steam Key?

In general no. The option to transfer KSP Store licenses to Steam is only available for those who bought KSP before it originally came out on Steam, March 20th 2013. Note that if you do qualify for a transfer and choose to do it, the process is OPTIONAL and IRREVERSIBLE. If you transfer your purchase to Steam, you will no longer be able to download or update the game from the KSP Store. To move to Steam, log in to your KSP Store profile and you will find the button to start the process next to your download link. If you can’t see the button in your profile it means you purchased the game after it was on Steam and you are not eligible, no exceptions, please don’t insist.

Nobody knows why the limit exists, every time it comes up someone tries to claim it's because squad would have to pay for the keys (they don't).

The truth of the matter is squad decided to do a one time offer rather than just generating keys as needed nobody outside squad knows why and they aren't talking.

Personally I think they should spend some time setting up the key gen as the added value of steam keys + store versions would move many people away from a straight steam purchase and their 30%.

Business. Money. Contracts. Deals. (And yes, they kind of would have to, for sure.)

Squad is not the owner of Steam, so they do have no say in how Steam is to treat customers. If Steam only agrees to accept customers into their service (providing the download and updates for KSP) - customers that did not buy the game of Steam, did not leave money in their pocket, that is - up to a certain point/quantity, there is nothing Squad can do. Squad could generate keys all day long, as long as these are not validated by Steam, it would not do anything.

*sigh* Once again VALVE gives the developers the tools to create keys THAT WORK for steam whenever they want to generate those keys. THEY DO NOT CHARGE FOR THEM. Get that? VALVE charges NOTHING for this service. They want your players to use STEAM so they give you the keys FOR NOTHING. Hell check their green light faq even on green light you get free keys to sell on your site! Do you seriously think people would sell steam games on say GMG if they had to pay GMG 30% AND Valve 30%? Seriously?

So once again. Once you have a distribution deal with Valve to use steam your given access to the steamworks SDK which includes a key gen. If your sales are small you do have to request a new batch be processed but you can have as many keys as you want! It's literally an email to their dev support it takes 2 minutes to type up and about 1-2 days to process depending on how  many you want generated.

We're not trying to exclude people, but we're often bound by the reality of doing business. Valve puts certain restrictions in place and we have to respect those.

*sigh* But Kasper, can you not READ? @marach has all the knowledge! /sarcasm

There's really no need for that. People are disappointed with the current situation which is entirely understandable. We shouldn't poke fun at them, that's just mean ;)

It's safe to say that we all would've liked to see parity for everyone when it comes to the availability of the pre-release branch.

Yeah it kinda helps when you know a lot of indie devs who have been through it. They can't give away keys when greenlit to get votes etc. but they can generate keys (or request them) for 0 cost, it depends on sale amount as to which they can use for their store. Many smaller devs use the humble widget to do it since it has relatively low processing fees.
