Demo hard freezes computer on startup.

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get the demo to run and every time I start the program my computer hard freezes (have to use the power button to restart machine). The program starts, runs through the loading bar and as soon as the main window loads and the music starts, it freezes. The music continues to play and the images still move on the main screen but the rest of the computer is frozen.

I tried the program as a stand alone, and through steam, same result each time. I have also tried to disable my firewall and other security features with the same result.

Version 0.18.3 DEMO

Output log here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1293843/output_log.txt

System specs here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1293843/DxDiag.txt

Security: Eset smart security.

Thanks for your help!

I'm no expert but I perused the log real quick and found a couple alarming lines:

Renderer: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (Integrated cards are very underpowered, does your comp have a dedicated card and the game just isn't using/detecting it? The DxDiag doesn't show one.)

Skipped rendering frame because GfxDevice is in invalid state (device lost)

HandleD3DDeviceLost HandleD3DDeviceLost: still lost (The above two lines show up several times and seem to imply some problem with the graphics card.)

HandleD3DDeviceLost HandleD3DDeviceLost: needs reset, doing it FullResetD3DDevice ResetD3DDevice dev->Reset D3Dwindow device not lost anymore Sending Alt key up to application (This line appears at the end and although it states it found the device it clearly didn't fix your problem.)

I checked the card out on pass mark and I think it would run KSP, maybe not well...but it should run. Since were talking about the Demo here that complicates things further... I assume you haven't had any problems playing any other games on the card? Not sure what to suggest here except updating your graphics card drivers, audio drivers, verifying the cache on steam etc... Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon with a better idea, best of luck!

Rocket In My Pocket, thanks for your help. I played around with things a bit tonight and I got it working. I went with your advice and started looking at my graphics card and found some ways to optimize it's performance. While I was working on that I discovered that I did not have Java installed on my machine. After the installed java the program worked fine.... I was also playing with my graphics settings, so I switched them all back to default just to be sure and it still worked. I was running out of ideas and your thoughts eventually got me where I needed to go.

Thanks for your help!
