Well, I suggest kerbal space program please don\'t kill me

Alternativley try your hand at minecraft especially with redstone contraptions or just muck around in real life with model rockets. (Warning, this can be dangerous and don\'t do anything without considering safety factors and making sure no one is going to be hurt/property damaged)

There's an "MMO" called Second Life with a physics, build, and scripting system which might fit that criteria. There were even some "rocketry" groups there years ago. As for the "testing" and getting special functionality to work, you'd have to focus mostly on the scripting aspect.

A lot of "weird" stuff in there too though (I won't elaborate here, lol), which I guess is one of the reasons I pretty much moved on. I liked it much more in the early days when the community was tiny/nerdier and mostly made up of creative or developer types, but I guess they had to open up the floodgates of the Internet and go mainstream to be sustainable.

I think it's still "free to play", though.

I think I see what your getting at, It's an incredibly promising gaming market that remains sadly unexplored.

As mentioned, games like Minecraft are good sandboxes, but really lack much functionality beyond managing resources.

Blockade Runner is definitely worth looking into, I was unable to get the hang of it last time I tried but it sounds a lot like what you're wanting.

At one point, Roblox was a pretty fun "play around and see what works" game engine, but I would hardly recommend it now.

To look a bit farther than sandbox, I would point you towards Mechwarrior Online. Now, bear with me here. It is a sci-fi shooter, but a large portion of the game is effective fielding of the tonnage your chosen weapons platform can provide. I'm sure I've spent hours in the Mechlab swapping weapons, ammunition, and useable heat sinks to find a good loadout. While not exactly realistic, it's pretty dang awesome to play around with the stompy-robots like that. It achieved a great balance in feeding both my engineering brain and itchy trigger finger, great depth for a combat sim.

Can I recommend Orbiter?

It's a simulator, and you can't build ships yourself, but it has the most accurate physics I have ever seen.

KSP is actually inspired by Orbiter and Harvester a member of the Orbiter Forum:)
