Boex Inc. Solar and Interstellar Challenges -

Recommended Posts

Boex Inc. proposes two challenges, to develop our knowledge of the the Sun we call Kerbol and the other stars in this Universe.

1) Lowest Altitude Solar Orbit -

The sheer amount of Delta-V required to orbit the sun makes it near impossible to orbit any lower than 5 million Kilometers, so I challenge any worthy Kerbanaut to take up this challenge, and blow my mind. The Apoapsis will be measured, not the Periapsis. ;)

I am yet to attempt this challenge, so go ahead, set the bar.

2) Shortest MET to Kerbol (Sun) Escape -

By this, I mean the time it takes for the snazzy new Patched Conics to say that you will never return to this Solar System. Here\'s my attempt, coming in at 8 minutes and 43 seconds.

Beat me. I dare you. :P

Just to get a few things straight, the other escape trajectory is Interstellar I. This is interstellar II. :D

As a general rule, parts must be 100% stock and no Autopilots either...I think I forgot to mention that earlier, too. HERP. TO. THE. DERP.

Right I did the sundive challenge. It\'s been done a few times before, but hell, bit of repetition never did hurt anyone.

I misread your 5 million KILOmeters and figured you meant just 5 million meters so I did that. Here\'s the craft, humbly named \'DeeVee\'. It\'s currently on a 5 million meter periapsis solar trajectory. I\'ve never tested that burn-up thing that was added this update but I think it\'ll kick in.. The craft still has half a tank (estimate at just under 1km/s dV) left so it might escape..

Apart from MechJeb (which isn\'t really needed, it\'s not a complex flight) it\'s all stock. I did use some tank toggling to regulate flow as the pipe logic turned out to be suboptimal.

Cheers

Don, I think he meant a circular orbit. Eventually there is a point where you\'re too close that you either spiral in, or you spiral out.

Correct. Like a fool I forgot to say that the apoapsis would be the dependant variable (Teh 1 U measure ;)). Sorry about that...

Ok I tried to re-do the mission, problem is that when down at the 5000km altitude the space kraken is in full force, making it very hard to perform appropriate burns. I submit the DeeVee II craft, this craft has more than enough dV (aptly named, eh?) to establish a very low kerbol orbit, I just lack the patience to defeat the kraken and actually do it.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, the first challenge is confounded a bit by the fuel bug.

As for the second challenge... Pic attached. Actual MET to escape is slightly less, since I had to switch to map view to check, before taking the screenshot. ???
