Why aren't my science equipment working???

Recommended Posts

I've been playing KSP for a while, mainly in sandbox, and I decided to play more on my career mode save, got my rocket into orbit and went to start research in my science Jr. but i couldn't do anything with it. I've never had this problem until now and it's very frustrating that it not working. The same thing happens with the goo, the most I can do is if I EVA I can deploy both goo and science Jr. but nothing else. I don't know if a mod has [snip] anything up in this but if anyone could help it would be much appreciated. :0.0:

You should still be able to eva (assuming you have unlocked that skill), to get to the experiement and 'take data' on it, and then store it in the capsule.  If will then be turned into science when you recover the vessel back on Kerbin, if you forgot an antenna.

Would really help if you could explain exactly what you mean by "couldn't do anything".  What is it that you're trying?

Here's how science instruments work:

  1. You're located somewhere new, in a place where you want to do science.
  2. You right-click on the instrument and click the button to run the experiment (e.g. "Observe Materials Bay" or whatever).
  3. This does science, but you don't get any credit for it right away because to get "points" for science, you have to recover the science at Kerbin.  Instead, the instrument is just sitting there with science in it.
  4. Recover the science in some fashion, then you get points for it.

To recover the science, you have basically three options:

  1. Transmit the science from the ship (requires an antenna).  This will give you credit instantly.  However, you take a big penalty:  a large percentage of the science points will evaporate when you do this (the size of the percentage depends on the instrument, but is typically >50% loss).  Exception:  Crew reports and EVA reports can be transmitted with 100% efficiency (no loss), so those are fine to transmit.
  2. Do nothing to the instrument.  Return the spaceship to the surface of Kerbin, with the instrument, and then recover the spaceship.  You get credit for the points then.
  3. Send out a kerbal on EVA, go to the instrument, right-click on it, click the button to take science out of it.  The science is then removed from the instrument and stored on the kerbal. The next time the kerbal enters a command pod, the science will be stashed in the pod.  Then return the command pod to Kerbin and recover it, at which point you get credit for it.

Note that options #2 and #3 are pretty similar, but have a few key differences:

  • Option 2 requires returning the instrument to Kerbin. If you jettison it, or if it burns off during reentry, you've just lost the science.  Option 3 only requires returning the pod, and your science points are safe even if you lose the instrument.
  • Option 2 means that you can only use the instrument once-- because once it has taken its measurement, it's "full", and you can't take another measurement without erasing the previous one.  Option 3 has no such limitation:  once the kerbal has emptied the instrument, the instrument is ready to take another measurement.
  • Note, however, that the Science Jr. and goo units are special:  they can only be used once.  If you transmit or EVA-remove their science, they become dead and unusable after that.
  • ...except if you have a scientist kerbal, the scientist can right-click on the Science Jr. or goo unit to "Restore" it, and then you can use it again.  :)
