Attaching the life preservers to each other

Those donut orange fuel tanks that look like life preservers... I don't remember ever having such a hard time attaching one to another, but in my current game it's nearly impossible. I can easily attack anything else under it, but it's almost impossible to attach another one of those donut tanks to itself. It stays red all the time, and only very briefly flashes green as you move the mouse away.

Am I doing something wrong with these things?

Only advice I can offer is to hold Alt while trying to place the second tank. That turns off surface attachment and forces it to use nodes. 

Now I know that those tanks aren't surface attachable, but you could try it anyway. Sometimes it seems like that makes it easier.

When I use them I always use alt click to add another one, even tho I dont like how they look clipping into each other.  Try using holding alt and slowly moving the part to get it to green up
