  1. 1. Will you enter Yet Another Air Combat Challenge (YAACC)?

1stly, huge kudos to inigma for the ASC series. I've enjoyed it immensely, but I've decided I'd like to run my own series if there's enough interest.

I'm seeing if there's enough support for Yet Another Air Combat Challenge. Hence the name :) Please give me your feedback and if you'd be interested in participating. If we get 10 people to commit I'll start it up.

The main idea is to have Kerbal-istic air-air combat, that is, realistic within the Kerbal universe. We are not trying to emulate "real" or "historic" combat in any way. So, no physics changing mods like FAR, and no "unrealistic" clipping/offsetting of parts. But, totally off-the-wall, rocket powered space planes bristling with lasers, missiles, and cannons are totally allowed. Also, this is not a "check out my cool looking craft" competition. This is all about maximum performance and lethality.

1st pass at "the rules".

  • Self-hosted with arbiter (myself or other officials) to settle any disputes and re-run anything as necessary. I'll parse the results and keep the leaderboard updated
  • Contestants run their own matches and post youtube videos for proof. Sorry, if you can't capture video and post it to youtube you can't play
  • 1v1
  • Best 3 of 5 rounds (all 5 rounds will be recorded for fun)
  • Kerbal'd entries only
  • Classes will be:
    • 5 tons fixed guns only (dogfight challenge)
    • 10 tons (Light Fighter)
    • 20 tons (Heavy Fighter)
  • No unrealistic clipping. No wings inside of wings, turrets/guns inside of each other, or other parts, etc...
  • craft file editing only within defaults
  • Maybe a fixed guns only cat? Good for developing dogfighting
  • Might ban or have separate cat for energy weapons, depends how exploity it gets
  • Competition start distance will be 12k
  • 100ish parts, 200 hard limit.
  • probably more stuff I'm not thinking about

This will be run in 1.1 with the following mods (subject to change). Link to all required mods. Working on my PC in 1.1!

Sorry to inform you but BDA Vessel Switcher, Camera tools and vessel mover are currently not working in 1.1 ... as for the others I am not sure

Actually, I have functioning ports for all of these (I think). Maybe not quick brake, or adjustable landing gear. We'll figure it out.

Well good luck on your challenge

If you decide to make it for dog fighting I may consider entering but that totally depends on how absurd the rules are

The rules are listed above. Feel free to comment.

Personally I am about somewhat realistic dog fighting as compared to a no holds barred style competition ... With a no holds barred it tends to degenerate into who can strap the most turrets onto a craft

I think (hope) that the weight limits will impede that. For example, the 10t class will force you to choose between 1 panther and heavy armament, or 2 panthers and lighter weapons load. We can adjust/add classes as necessary. I think the 10t class, possibly with fixed guns, sounds like it might be your style.

You may want to consider using some sort of points system for the weapons as you can build a fighter without weapons under 5 tons and strap a multitude of weapons on it

May I suggest using previous AI tournament point systems as a model ... They were put in place due to what I mentioned above

Good luck with your challenge, I'll pass

so what's a good minimum weight limit then?

I'm not going to tell you how to set up your challenge as it is your challenge and not mine. As I said above, perhaps you may want to check out other AI tournaments that have been ran on the forums and model your challenge around what has been done before or take a piece from here and a piece from there to build yourself a challenge that won't get out of hand

Not saying that it will get out of hand but if there aren't a set of concrete rules then it is likely that it will

Good luck on your challenge
