The Giant's Causeway creationist controversy

On the same day the Higgs boson was announced to the world, the story broke that the National Trust, a UK charity that makes national sites and buildings available to tourism, had given space to a creationist display at their brand new Giant\'s Causeway centre.

The offending audio display suggests that there is some sort of debate that the Causeway, a natural phenomenon of hexagonal basalt columns thought by scientists to be 50-60 million years old, is actually consistent with the Young Earth Creationist view, that it must be less than 6000 years old.

What has followed is a media firestorm, with many angry National Trust members threatening to or actually cancelling their memberships, and the National Trust becoming the subject of ridicule by scientists like Prof Brian Cox and Richard Dawkins.
